.....so, me and the mrs are sat there watching tv in the extension when we hear this cat howling. We knew it was Thomas (our cat, obviously) but it wasn't his usual meeoww to get into the house.
So i open the patio door and there he is sitting there, like a dog, with a dead finch at his feet. Looking pleased as punch with himself.
I'm pretty sure he didn't kill it, as he is 17, a little short-sighted and there was no scuffling of feathers or blood on the bird. However it found its way into Thomas' mouth is anybody's guess, but the mrs said that cats do this and bring you their catch as a present! She praised him  and told him what a good cat he was. I picked the bird up, it was still warm, but no blood or puncture wounds.
Thomas just sat there with wide eyes in anticipation, i put the bird back down at his feet. He picked it up and trotted off back into the garden with his prize.
I thought it was quite bizarre how he literally presented us with his catch. His eyes really did almost light up as they're usually a little beedy.

But again, i've been told that cats do this to impress their owners.

Discuss?

Yeh, thats a normal cat thing to do.
If you get a kitten he'll start bringing back half-dead things to teach the kitten how to hunt. :D

How long have you had this cat?
You're seriously telling me he's never done this?

My cat, since we've had him (11 years now, or thereabouts) brings in at least 1 dead thing a week.
Theres been times when he's done it every night for weeks on end, then torn it apart on the carpet (grr...).
Difference being if you tried to take my cats catch off him, he'll go beserk, try and have your hand off, when you finally get it, he'll attack your legs and all sorts.
Or he'll bring something half dead in, let it go, catch it again etc. Sometimes he'd lose it and you'd come down in the morning to find a half dead bird, had so many mice problems too.

Theres a bit of a plus now though, he's finally started to show affection other than bringing in his hunts, only took 11 years :D

My cat is a treasure hunter. He's always finding random crap, then meowing at us to come and inspect his most recent haul.

He found a shuttle **** a few weeks ago, christ knows where he got that.

I once walked into my living room one morning to see George (the cat!) sat in the centre of the room looking up. This was unusual as he would normally come and fuss around me, so I glanced up to see a 'ruddy great bird sat swinging on our lamp shade - never been so shocked in my life!!

George isnt the biggest cat and this bird was huge! How on earth he got it through our cat-flap is a mystery!!

Took me ages to catch the thing and let it go!!!

One of our cats brought in a bird a while back, i assumed it was dead as it was laying on the ground eyes wide open absoloutely no movement. I picked it up and walked outside and the bugger just flew out of my hand and away, almost cacked meself.

Lol, he's 17 now, the mrs has had him since a kitten, longer than her twin sons actually so he is higher up in the pecking order.
She said he'd not done this for years and I've been with her for 5 years and i've never seen him do stuff like this.

I'm wondering whether it was because:
a) he found it and was easy pickings, or
b) i recently tied a knot in an old shoelace and he's been battling with it every time i dangle it near him. Previously, i've never managed to get him to 'play' before, he'd just look at the shoelace, then look at me in disdain as if thinking "just do one will ya!".
Just wondering if he's found a new zest for life and its continued outside with him hunting again.

We toyed with the idea of a kitten, but in all honesty we're not sure he'd take to one. Possibly even beat it up, or pack his bags.

Our house rabbit Albert or Big Al to us (dwarf lop-eared) terrorises Thomas. Its takes a few charging headbutts by Albert for Thomas to retaliate with combination punches to the head. Lol, boy Big Al go running then. :D

My cat has brought home a savaloy, a whole, raw pork chop, and a roast chicken with half the meat still on it.

I think he's realised that dead things are easier to catch and generally much tastier than live things :D Lord knows where he got them from, there weren't any bin bags out on either occasion...

You do realise that your cat is showing you that he can hunt and kill and is doing this to try and inspire terror in you. It's not a present, it's a warning of what he'll do to you if you cross him.

theres nothing quite like coming downstairs in the dark only to step on half a mouse/vole/crow in your bare feet! Only to see the cat sitting there with a dirty look on his face as you just trod all over his "trophy"
