I was looking to blow 2k on a plasma with the proceeds from my ST24, but tbh i dont watch any tv and my 2nd love is cars (1st being football, the missus scrapes in 3rd/4th :p ) so it got me thinking what sort of motor could i buy for 2k to tweak up and whatever, its not going to be a daily driver, so fuel/mileage/practicality are just not important.

I was thinking either jap or german(e30?) something which has parts easily available, eventually, prob in 2007 I will be taking the car to track days, but i want something to basically tune up over the summer.

What do ya reckon lads

Could you get a 205 and then do a mi16 conversion for 2k?
You could probably manage both for under 2k, but then there's not a huge amount you can do modding mi16s I don't think, or even GTi in general, they're pretty sorted as standard. Something old like a mk1/2 escort or a proper mini would have a huge scope for modding, you could pretty much replace every single part. The other obvious option is jap stuff, they seem to pretty into aftermarket parts.

burns is right....

why buy a chav motor when a proper mini or escort mk 1/2 will give you far more modability for a lot les money....

the trouble with jap car modding is that most of the bits have to be imported...

**** off with this "chav" ****, it got annoying about 2 years ago. In what way does chav describe one of the finest handling hot hatches with 130 brake? Let me guess an old mini handles better :p

200sx i think aswell. Theres PLENTY of jap parts kicking about. And I think its something different. Not found of hot hatches or escorts.

Im going for the 200sx.....very moddable and a lot of "bang for your buck". There is also one subaru impreza turbo wrx on the trader, L plate, £1995.
Or maybe a celica GT4? Or if you can actually find one that is in decent enough condition.....a Starion!!!!

EDIT: You can get a 300zx for £2500!!! Get that if your budget could stretch.....seriously moddable! But ugly!

Escorts are pretty hard to come by tbh, if i could get one i would have one tbh.

I like the idea of a 200sx, i have had loads of 306`s so i really dont want another, 205 is a possibility, but again they are fairly pricey for a good one, my other thought was to keep the mondy, but i think v6 needs too much money spending on it squeeze the horses out.

I really want a car that i can tweak the engine, couldnt care less about the exterior.

Anyone know what the modding potential is on the older civic/crx vtecs?

Trouble with Minis and old Escorts is people see them as classics now, and that pushes the price up. You also need to find one in good nick or you'll have to spend money sorting out rust and rot.

200SX is what I'd be looking at.

Been offered a tubby for 600 notes on a J plate, it needs a front bumper respray, but its fairly std, might look at that.

So its looking a 200sx then, what age/mileage can i get for 2k?

I was about to say you could get a high mileage 94/95 S14 for 2K... but a quick look on trader and erm... no you cant anymore [autos dont count]. Very odd that prices seem to have actually gone up in the last year. Perhaps its all those drift programs and mag articles of late - not that I'm complaining as my car doesnt appear to have depreciated in the last year :/

That said, Trader advertised prices are a world away from what some of those cars will fetch unless there is absolutely nothing wrong with them - unlikely for most. Plus you will have to travel as they dont grow in supermarket car parks.

2K will buy you an S13 with nothing wrong with it, a few mods already done (seriously recommended buying a pre modded car at this price level) and a bit of cash spare for track tyres, running costs or repairs as and when something *does* go wrong with an old car that you will be flinging round a track.

Look at this thread for what you could be aiming at with half the budget (though with contacts and experience with them), but as I said, bare in mind that cheap old S13's will go wrong.
