Hi there all,

I have a few options open to me after my MSc, (my finals finish next week). But this summer I have to do my dissertation so the earliest I will begin anything is October'ish.

The options are;

1) Go through the RAF selection process and hopefully get a job as an Engineering Officer.

2) Look for a job locally (not many good engineering jobs up here, especially in Aerospace/Mechanical)

3) Look at moving to London and get a 9-5 job

4) Plan a big skiing/snowboarding trip with some mates, just keep a boring job to pay for that while looking for a better one?

Come on OcUK help me decide.

If you like an institutionalised life, this is for you. If you fancy the idea of wearing a uniform but dont want your entire life controlled, wait until you have engineering experience and join the RAF reserve...

2) Look for a job locally (not many good engineering jobs up here, especially in Aerospace/Mechanical)

Depends where 'locally' is...

3) Look at moving to London and get a 9-5 job

I'd imagine that this would be your eventual option, yet not neccessarily just yet...

4) Plan a big skiing/snowboarding trip with some mates, just keep a boring job to pay for that while looking for a better one?

Probably the best course of action...

Cheers for your reply,

Locally is Newcastle Area (mostly marine engineering up here ), Which is something I could technically move into but not easily.

London isn't really an Area where I would like to work, but I know it will be nessacary evil :(

The RAF is something I know I would enjoy, it also gives you good experience to go from.

As for Skiing/Snowboarding, Think ill plan it while looking for job and going through the RAF selection. See what comes out of it all.

Any way thanks for your input and ill try and keep you updated.

Third option, do it if you want to and understand the ties with the job.

2) Look for a job locally (not many good engineering jobs up here, especially in Aerospace/Mechanical)

Second option. There must be something otu there.

3) Look at moving to London and get a 9-5 job

Final option, or if it was me, not and option at all. Do it as an absolute final resort IMO, London isnt the best of places to live, or pay for living costs etc.

4) Plan a big skiing/snowboarding trip with some mates, just keep a boring job to pay for that while looking for a better one?

1st option. Enjoy yourself while you can.

Well look at the RAF, I've been through the first stage of interviews when I put it on hold for some exams, the pay looks good and as long as you don't mind some crappy hours etc it looks like an awesome job.

Go for the RAF mate I have a few mates in there that love it, I dont think that you would regret it... plus its all cutting edge stuff

There are plenty of places other than London to work (and plenty of jobs that aren't necessarily 9-5). Get yourself down to some graduate recruitment fairs armed with your CV and let the interesting companies try to recruit you (rather than you trying to find somewhere to work). You'll at least get an idea of the kind of jobs that are out there.

But like a lot of people are saying, definitely take the holiday option now while you can. Who knows when you'll next be able to find the time/money to do it? Besides, after several years at Uni, it's deserved!

I have family living down in Lincoln, and literally all of the family down there that is working is linked to the RAF in one way or another, and they all absolutely love it (8 of them i think). Couple in the RAF police, others in the maintenance area and another in such a high position eh cant talk about his job.

Not one of them dont enjoy it and its somethigg at the back of my mind when i come out of uni, but i dont know what is available in the RAF for a BSc Comp Sci if anything at all.

I know dude, but only some of it is, a lot of the aircraft systems, bar the typhoon, nimrod MR4 and the JSF, most are 80-90's engieering. I think I would do it more for the lifestyle and job satisfaction over pay and everything.

You can't really be too picky about what job you start out in, even with a MSC im afraid. I'd go with the RAF option. I mean whats the worst that can happen? You don't like the job and quit after a couple of years with some good solid Aerospace Engineering experience, which will give you a good grounding to go into any other engineering line. Good luck with whatever option you choose though.

Consider a Ph.D. You may find you can use your M.Sc. research towards it thus saving yourself a year and you can always investigate sponsorship for your Ph.D. It's the easiest way and decent sponsorship can provide a reasonable amount of money to live on. You may have left it a little late for that though, and taking a year out before resuming a research topic may result in you never bothering to actually finish it off. Remember, at your GP, you can address him as "Mister" and if he insists on you calling him "Doctor", you can insist he calls you that too ;)

I've thought about doing my PhD but its something which doesnt interest me just yet.

But thanks for the suggestion :)
