What to do after my MSc?

Yes mate we all know what you want me to do :D

Number 1, followed by number 4.
If you get in you can do number 4 for free (or next to nothing) as an 'expedition'. If you don't succeed at 1, but you still ultimately want to join, you can go skiing/snowboarding in the time you need to wait to apply again.

I've thought about doing my PhD but its something which doesnt interest me just yet.

But thanks for the suggestion :)

If you interested in perhaps doing a PhD in the future I'd think about it carefully now, I graduated in 2004, and I'm just about to go back to do my master by research and the amount of stuff I've forgotten is unbelievable (I wouldn't mind but I was studying with the OU in the meantime!),

Especially if you can get a ESPRC studentship.

Interesting, I wonder how that works with consultants...

They as still classed as doctors iirc, just like a professor is still a Dr but has an extra title given to him due to him teaching for so long.

Consultants are usually "Mr" anyway not that you ever get one, they're almost invariably registrars instead while the real guy sees his private patients...

KaHn, I meant to say as well that while you think 2 more years is a long time to spend on a Ph.D. when you're older those 2 years will seem pretty insignificant. I suppose your interest depends on what M.Sc. you've done, and how much you enjoyed doing it. Remember, that doing a Ph.D. also can allow you to experience some lecturing as well. External lecturing with an agency used to net me around £500 a day and that was many years ago...

Phd... I did think about this option and then thought about the work that I had to put into my Msc... not sure if I want to do that all again...

I can see where your coming from the the RAF, how about Bae then? I know that they are always looking for new people

Do tell, Phykell...

Also, would you mind furnishing us with a few details of your Phd and what industry you work in now?

The reason I ask is becasue I plan to take my doctorate next year, and was wondering what may be at the other end of the tunnel...

Im in exactly the same boat, i finish my MSc in october'ish in elec comms engineering,

1) Join the RAF as Eng officer (pilot maybe if i was good enough)
2) Go travel for a few months maybe camp america / an sta round the world ticket
3) Phd at uni which i wouldnt mind doing spoken to my prof about it already
4) Move to the states and get a job in FL/TX/CA company, something i would like to do at some point in my life
5) Or lastly get a job locally (NW) or somewhere in Britain..

I really wouldnt mind doin some gratuate role for a tech company to learn management etc. Filling in the Sigma application for BAe at the mo

The only thing about the RAF is moving about, not too sure if the missus would like it, i know id love it, esp the RAF life.

Suppose its an easier decision to make when you dont have to think about anyone else

Tourmai,

What degree class do you have if you are looking at the sigma programme?

Also I have never liked the look of working for BAE or rolls royce, I would hate to get stuck designing a bolt or something similiar.

ooow I know I know... Sigma is like cutting edge graduate stuff in Bae, supposed to really rock and pay is not supposed to be half bad, go for that mate... its all about researching new tech in that...

Stelly

I know what u mean about workin for Bae etc, every other month you hear about lay offs.

As far as I know the minimum Bae entry is 2.2 degree for the graduate development framework, im on for a distinction at masters, so im just goin to apply for the sigma course and see what happens.

I remember speakin to someone from my uni at a careers fair whos on the program and is enjoying it. They travelled around quite abit and went abroad. The prospect after you've finished shouldnt be half bad with the experience etc.

See the pay doesnt really bother me atm, regardless of where I join I will be looking at around 25k starting, which is suitable to say the least :)

As for the Sigma, it doesnt really interest me :/

I dont know maybe ill just run away somewhere hot and open up a shack on a beach

Yeah I think I will probably still apply for it but im not sure, they only accept a small number of people per year, and they are not looking for someone who is looking for a quick fix and move on to a different company, they will only employ you if your looking at being the next company director etc.

Thats my plan for when i retire at 40 :D somethin to keep me busy

Ill let them decide that then :D whats wrong with that position. Its only a job at the end of the day if you dont like it you can quit. Which is easier for me not having any kids. I dont want to be tied down to somethin I dont enjoy, ive seen it happen to my dad that took its toll on his health.

Me im just applying for anything over here and the states and see which ones show an interest.

I would strongly recommend you get a little, possibly an engineering job somewhere for a year, then go on a round trip around the world (costs about £1100) and save about £5000 of spending money (to put in a nationwide account) with two or three of your best mates.

I say live your life while you still don't have any commitments!

Then in about 8 months of going around the world when it's all over, you have something to write in your CV, (have you been to any CV workshops?) and you would have tasted and seen some of the world in the process.

Think of it as a treat for yourself!

Then you can look for a serious job in engineering, or if you find a good job for a year, now, ask for a 'Sabbatical'.

I know for a fact, that should I pass this year at University (doing BSc Computer Science) I will go into my final year and then after that save and go on a round trip with some of my friends.

If I fail, I am going to think about a different degree, and use my job to save for a round trip, then either move away from the UK, should I find something, or get a business off the ground.

I don't fancy working for Sainsburys for longer than two more years earning about 12k or less a year before I get raped by the government and the inland revenue, then possibly becoming a step below manager or a manager. It's a dead end job, simple but not my idea of a career.

Remember, the world is your oyster...and you can do anything, anything at all that you can set your mind to.

Oh young ideals :) I hope they work out.

Like you Tourmai, I think over the summer I will be applying to pretty much everything, I work in a bar so I should have some cash coming in to sort out some type of holiday near the end of summer :)

I think I'm going to go through the RAF selection and just see what I get offered at the end. If I have nothing concrete by novemberish, i'll be snowboarding in the new yr :D
