What to do after Uni...?

Ok, well the end of Uni isn't that far off now.

I'm into my final year, and around June/July I'll be finished.

My main plan, is to move to New Zealand as soon as I get the chance.

My parents/brother should be moving in 2010, when they're financially ready and brother has finished degree.

I'm wanting to go out before them, and I know that the only way I could get out there is with my degree, and a job offer. The points for a degree wouldn't get me out there on its own.

My degree is in forensic science, but aside from a forensics job, where else could it take me?

I've been looking at the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the Navy, but I can't see a great deal of jobs that require a scientific education within the forces.

It would be handy to note that I'm also partially colourblind, although I hear lantern tests are done if Ishihara tests are failed - which could still allow for a medical pass.

Any ideas?

so your wondering what jobs other than scientific ones? or just other jobs that are not forensic ones?

Could be non-scientific, could be scientific.

Don't mind really - currently I'm open to all suggestions.

Providing it's interesting, requires a degree (not necessarily scientific) - I'd be interested at looking at it.

Hospitals? not sure if a forensic degree qualifies you to work in the labs there but worth looking into as requirements maybe different there. Industry jobs like steelworks etc in the labs..?

non scientific - police maybe?(depending if your going to be a citizen there I guess) I imagine a forensic degree will look nice on a cv for it..?

If you want to use your degree but don't care what in then any commissioned officer role in the armed forces.

I watched a programme on Sky Travel which said that NZ is rather geo-unstable, and there is a fair probability that a volcano could errupt over Wellington. I thought I might mention it. That put me off visiting, does it bother you at all?

If somebody comes up with a good answer to this let me know-I graduated last July and still haven't worked it out!!! It's becoming a little depressing...

An asteroid could wipe out all life on our planet at really any time, if yellowstone park volcanoes go, we all die(most likely all), frankly, theres lots of extinction level events ready to go, if you worry about it, you wouldn't bother doing anything ever on the offchance you might die before you finish whatever you can't be bothered to start. Frankly, chance of being stabbed by a chav and losing all your money in a stock market crash followed by another great depression here is much higher than being killed in a volcano.

To be honest I'd rather die in a volcanoe eruption in New Zealand, than die in England in either a care home, or being mugged for my iPod.

What a way to go. :D

Honestly though, nothing is going to stop me moving out there - unless it's an act of god of some sort. I'm going to apply for every job available to me out there to gain entry, grin and bare it until my parents and brother move out - then look for something else.

Hopefully I can find something I'd enjoy first time though.

My mum has a friend quite high up in a Hyrdroelectric plant out there, could be a way in.

aren't there more experienced, more qualified people in your uni department who are paid to help you decide?

I don't mean to sound rude but you did Forensic Science at Uni, do you think they are going to bite your hand off to get you into the country?

Go on a temporary work visa and work in bars or just go traveling for a bit, see if you like the place first.

I've been out there for a month already and travelled both islands. Parents have been to the New Zealand Expo event and spoke with advisers.

This isn't just and idea thought up over night, it's been something we've been wanting to do since June/July 2007.

They're crying out for graduates and the like. My degree isn't going to get me far points wise, but add that to a job offer and you'll gain residency.

I'm not saying they'll bite my hand off, but the fact that a lot of their graduates are moving to Australia, and the fact there's a large shortage in a lot of jobs out there - gives me a better chance.

Fairly clueless at my uni. I end up sounding like I know more about the subject and available jobs than they do.

They just type something into a computer and suggest a few things that pop up on the screen.

I'll speak with my course leader and see if we have any links in New Zealand. I doubt it though.

It gives graduates who they need a better chance, and the way residancy works is you have to be doing a job they can't fill with people from their own country iirc.

Well thats how it works for company sponsorship in my company.

A Forensic Science degree is a bit specific, surely you would want to do a job in that field after doing the uni course?

Not sure what else you could do in NZ - would suggest you research your area/jobs available etc.
