I currently have the ASUS Z270 PRIME motherboard and am using the 1TB 980 ( not evo or pro ) as the sole SSD.
I also have two external backup drives : A 250gb Crucial MX500 and a 1TB 970 Evo.

I feel I have two many drives and want to get rid of one. Should I swap the 980 for the 970 Evo and then get rid of the MX500?
Mind you, my crucial backup data is only around 100GB.

Your motherboard has 2x M.2 slots, so you could just plug the 1TB 970 Evo into your motherboard and then hey presto, you got rid of one of the external drives.
I want to backup all my data to an external drive. I currently do it manually ( copy-paste ) once every month.

3 drives is too many?
Not counting my external drives
I have 9 internal drives lol
5 x nvme and 4 x sata ssds

Multiple backups always better than 1 backup
Internal sata ssds do have an advantage over m2/nvme
You can just disable them in the bios
When you're not actively backing stuff up
To isolate them
Or in my case they're hot swap so can disable them
Without the bios
No easy way to disable internal m2 drives yet

Individual user choice this one
Depends how often your data changes
But an automated backup would be more effective
Daily,weekly,monthly
Grandfather, father,son (GFS)

I’m rather confused why you would perform copy and pastes once a month between two NVME drives, that’s really bad for both drives. Fit a 3.5” drive and backup to that? Setup some provisioning and scheduling too?

He's talking 100GB a month approx
That's only 1.2TB in a year
The 970 evo as an example has 600TBW
So not sure why it's really bad for the drives

One of my m2 is a 9 year old sm951
A load of copying and pasting image files for 9 years
Doesn't seem to have done it any harm

Copying and pasting between 2 x nvme drives
Is where they really shine for me
That's when the speed difference between them and 2.5 sata ssds
Becomes obvious
Maybe I am missing why it's really bad for them
But none of my nvme have failed
I just accumulated more lol
So now have 5 in the pc

What is bad about using the speed of an NVMEs to do regular backups?

(although yes personally I'd set up a scheduled robocopy so that
a) I didn't have to worry about remembering to do it
b) it only copies files that have changed

This seems like the most sensible option right? Unless you want to keep it external for some reason?

Couple of reasons why I think putting second m2
On their motherboard may not be
Best solution
Both external means you can have 2 backups
That can be isolated when not actively backing up

Depends which motherboard but having 2 onboard
May affect pcie lanes, lower gpu pcie rate, lose sata ports

Unlike sata drives there's no easy way to disable a m2 drive
Meaning your second m2 backup can't be isolated when not
Being actively backed up

The one plus depending on what hardware we are talking about
The second m2 internally may be faster
Than having it externally

Performing excessive writes, as you seem to acknowledge.

Yeah I am with armageus on this
And you couldn't pay me
To swap my nvme backup drives for spinning disks
The speed difference is huge

Like I said one of my m2 still going strong
After 9 years of use
Anything can fail obviously
But Anything that's important to you
Should never be backed up in only 1 place anyway

Forgot about that, that's a good one
