What to do with a semi-bricked 360

to me dirty disc errors means the DVD drive is knackered. this fix is for RRoD and gpu/scaler chip problems so it probably wont help you. but if its out of warranty its always worth a shot :)

My x-box used to give dirty disc errors all the time and i've given up on it now, i understand this is the precursor to the RRoD. Microsoft wanted £50 to fix it so i didn't bother in the end, does mine sound like the same issue?

Dirty disc errors are completely unrelated to RRoD. You're best off getting the drive replaced.

Well Chalk another success, i had just done the X-Clamp mod which worked for 2 days but then got the E74 code!!
So followed the info in this post in a last attempt, from Phemo and Voila Started straight up thanks Matey

Ninja :D:D

EDIT: cooked for 4 mins + only had the top side of the board open not the bottom when covered with the foil

Tried this today.

Left it in @ 230c for 3mins, afterwards it was still showing RROD and the fans wouldn't spin-up, so something got killed.

However, another box I tried, I didn't bother wrapping in tin-foil or removing the heatsinks or metal chassis and I left it in @ 230c for 2mins and it cured the 'no video' problem with the scaler chip.

I just won a RROD 360 from an auction site for £21. Gonna give this a go when I get it - already have a X-Clamp kit and AS paste.

The above post worries me now that it may have been a waste of money

When I get it, is there any way to tell how old the console is to see if it's still under the 3 years warranty?

Would make no difference if you bust the warrenty seal opening the case I'd imagine.

For £21 it's cheap enough not to matter :) You can sell the DVD drive alone for around £20 so you got a bit of a bargain there.

Thought i'd bump this old thread rather than start a new one since i mentioned this in here.

Basically I had been using my flatmate's 360 instead of mine which is currently boxed up. However, i've started to realise my flatmate's 360 is giving dirty disc errors on exactly the same games mine was.

The main problem was always forza 2 - it loads on my flatmate's but the graphics are all over the place and it crashes when it trys to load an actual race. PGR4 and GTA4 are problematic and i've not really played any further than i got on my 360 and Colin Mcrae:Dirt crashes after only the second race - it crashed during the first time i tried it on my 360 and it crashes at the same point on my flatmate's 360!

The thing is, loads of other games work, both old and new. All my game discs are immaculate apart from the forza 2 disc which seems to have a couple of minor scratches (and i'm talking really minor, not the sort you'd expect to cause problems). So i'm at a bit of a loss as to what is wrong. It seems far too coincidental that both 360's could have exactly the same drive issue?

After 3 days trying to get rid of a 0013 error with all sorts of "tricks" and mods I'm attempting this tonight. Absolutely bricking it, but it's a last resort.

Wish me luck.

I fixed a 0013 the other day. From what I've read around online it appears to be related to solder joints under the RAM chips or possibly (and more likely) the GPU connections that lead to the RAM chips. Try to cover the board well but leave the RAM chips exposed as much as possible. You can never use too much foil :) I tend to go for 3 or 4 layers over the caps/plastic parts.

If it breaks you haven't lost out on anything so it's well worth a go. I fixed a more stubborn board the other day which I ended up leaving in for 9 minutes due to losing track of time. It still came out fine and is working fine :)

Well it's been in and out in 4 mins exactly :p

Waiting for it to cool down then I'll peice everything back together and see what happens.

I used some masking tape to tape down the tin foil which smelled nice after about 1 minute :p

I fixed my friends launch day core machine using the oven & X-Clamp replacement, booted up first time. It was my first time working on a 360, surprisingly straight forward and easy to do if you follow the instructions :). The 5 minutes in the oven felt like forever, I was just waiting for something to go "bang" or a funny smell.
