What to expect when you are given incorrect information

buy from store B for lower price.

Phone store A and put a complaint in about the manager, when they've investigated advise them that you purchased from store B as you didn't want to give store A the money.

Most retail chains seem to operate along the lines of:

Customer service implies that they will price match - enquire at store.

Stores are handed down a policy of "we do not price match but don't tell the customer this, try to interest them in an alternative product while reinforcing that we constantly 'strive' to make our prices competitive so as to offer our customers the best value for their money"

I'd do this tbh... and since you're annoyed at the whole thing - write a letter to their head office - they ought to send some vouchers or something as they have messed you around/wasted your time.... tis fairly standard for companies to send some vouchers in the post when receiving a complaint letter.

An item was showing as in stock at my local Currys store so I reserved it and went to collect it later that day.. Turned out it wasn't in stock and I had wasted time and petrol.

I just got on with life.

but you can't say you weren't a tad miffed.
Wasted time, wasted petrol etc.

It's a good job the OP hasn't suffered some of the stuff I've put up with:

1) Back in the 80s Richer Sounds wouldn't deliver to my house no matter how much money I offered them so I went down to London to collect. I got there and not only was the item not in stock but the Manager said they would have posted it for £5.

2) Back in the 80s again I rang a HiFi shop on the Friday to confirm they had a certain cassette recorder so made the pilgrimage to London. Not having Google Maps back then it ended up being two tube rides and a bus ride to the shop in a really rough part of London where they could smell I wasn't local. I find the shop and told they hadn't got any in stock. I argued about how he'd got me down there all the way from Stoke under false pretenses and he pulled a baseball bat out.

3) I rang PCWorld in Manchester when it first opened and an assistant confirmed they had a certain graphics card in stock that me and my mate wanted so we made the 40 mile trip to be told they hadn't got one.
