What to expect....

Aygo? Not a big fan of the looks and they're too slow :p

Why is everyone here so against buying new cars... Yeah fair enough about the depreciation etc... but surely for a car that i'm gonna keep for a long long time, it's not *that* bad buying it new is it? I probably wont be selling this new car that I buy anyway, as I'll probably pass it onto my sister or mum.

So... what do you guys think of the Corolla? or any other suggestions as to what other cars I can look at? (no more comments about me getting a 'new' car *please*!! yes, silly, I know.....)

Mini Cooper Auto @ £13500 from Broadspeed.com :p

Or, a Skoda Fabia VRs. Which is, if I recall, not too bad on the depreciation front, and less than your budget.

VRS VRS VRS :D

Looked at the Mazda 3? New Fiesta? VW Fox??

There is a massive list of small cars you could get. I went for the Fabia VRS and havent regretted anything. Only problem is, my car is cursed :( 2 people have driven into it, both left the scene, one of which i caught up with ;)
The other i didnt know about, and left me with a £700 bodywork bill!

Anyway, id still go for a fabia. Fantastic little motors. Bit quirky, mainly due to the badge.

How much is a VW Golf?
Too much, even for a low model.

Mini Cooper? I've had a look, but with all the equip I want it totals up to £14/5k. Fabia VRS - it doesn't come in automatic and my bf has it already lol
Mazda 3 - expensive for the one auto model that they do.

I find Fiestas 'plain'.. 'normal'.. and 'boring' lol. and VW fox is slow...

My ever so slightly biased opinion.

How about a Fiat Grande Punto?

Fastest selling cars for the last 3 consecutive months in western europe.

It's the safest car in its class, looks great and has a LOT of equipment.

Also on the residuals side, Fiat have teamed up with Glasses on this one (Glasses are responsible for residual values in the UK) and the Grande Punto is projected to be worth 40% of its new price in 3 years time - Which doesn't sound a lot but compared to its direct competition - Yaris, Clio Corsa is class leading.

For example a Corsa is projected at 30% Clio at 35-37% and Yaris at 38%.

And the Grande Punto comes in cheaper than the rest!

£13k buys you a top of the range Sporting 130bhp Diesel or a Eleganza 120bhp Diesel with change left over!!

Auto box is due to be launched later on this year at a cost of £700 which would bring a Sporting to £12595 or an Eleganza to £12995.

I just did a multi-paragraph post on how to buy the best car of this type for for your budget, did you not see it?

Getting a £17,000 list price car brand new for £13k is the most sensible thing you can do in your situation, save from get this ridiculous 'OMG MUST BE NEW' notion out of your head anyway.

lol yeah I saw it, but the focus is a bit big isn't it......... It's more like something my dad would drive tho.........

And I don't really like the looks of the new punto :p
I just had a look at the Mini website and they put their prices up
I'm liking the Corolla now, so I guess i'll go visit my local Toyota dealers and see if they have any used cars available...

No, it's exactly the same size as the Corolla as it's a Corolla rival. And if the Focus is something your Dad would drive, the Corolla is something your Grandad would drive. Honestly, the Focus is owned and driven by all ages, from 17 year old new drivers to... well, older people.

It's just an all round decent car - and with the excellent discounts available, a chance to buy brand new and get marginally less stiffed than you would normally be.

MisChief: the people who are telling you to not buy a brand new car aren't against new cars in general, what they are trying to stop you from doing is spending a shed load of cash on a run of the mill depreciation disaster.

Now theres nothing wrong with run of the mill but theres no need to pay top dollar for it. You could buy nearly new and still have some warrenty left. Or you could buy a 3 year old for a few grand and even if it ends up being a complete lemon its not going to cost you as much in repairs as you lost on the Lupo.

You say your going to keep it for a long time so depreciation doesn't matter but did you say the same for the Lupo or had you already decided that you were going to get shot of that for a huge financial loss before you handed over the money?

New cars come with faults believe it or not.

Many small problems get fixed at the dealers rather than stop the factory production line. So you need to be totally confident about being dependant on the dealer and that relationship when buying new.

And of course don't buy French !
