What to go for 7900GT or X1800XT?

Get which ever you can get cheapest / which ever YOU prefer.

I have a X1800XT and when it gets used it is very good (although oblivion runs a lot better on my 360 compared even this pc)

Any game will be more than playable on either card and performance wise the X1800XT has a very slight edge but it all depends on the games themselves.

512mb of ram will be very handy with the unreal engine 3.0 (when games come out) at 1280x1024 :P it certainly is in Oblivion :P
According to Oblivion performance tests, the game doesn't benefit from 512MB as opposed to 256MB video memory. Call Of Duty 2 and many other games definitely do, though.

I thought it was £190ish + VAT for the X1800XT 256MB?

From my reciept (which I am positive isn't showing added tax):
£159.95 x 1 - Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-121-SP)
£49.95 x 1 - Corsair 1GB DDR Value Select PC3200 CAS3.0 (VS1GB400C3) (MY-062-CS)

Sub-Total: 209.9
Shipping: 8
VAT: 38.14
Total: 256.04

Nope i thought it was £179 for the 256 and £195 for the 512... Both plus VAT... Guess i have missed them now though... Guess it will be the 7900GT then... :)

As far as I could see there were no 512s on This Week Only, only the PowerColour one or something in the graphics section for around £250.

Only X1800XT I saw on This Week Only at all was the 256 I bought, which Gibbo warned me was going up £20 yesterday (Thursday.)

You probably read 256 and thought 512, happens to everyone at some point.

Exsomnis,

No mate YOU are wrong the powercolor 512MB X1800XT was £195 +VAT last week (finished thursday) As i was going to purchase one but also missed the thursday deadline! Damn it!!!

Cheers,
Hugest

Nope definitely 195+VAT for the Powercolor X1800XT 512 mb last week, just got one and flashed it to XT PE speeds, 5200 marks in 3dmark06! Oh and Oblivion with HDR and AA is gorgeous.

How much AA are you using with HDR?
What frame rates are you getting outside?

I can promise you, it won't be many. Even my [email protected] Ghz plus a nice clocking x1900xtx struggles with anything above 2XAA+HDR in Oblivion. Indoor areas are fine but outdoors is unplayable.

Its amazing how many talk of AA and HDR in oblivion and only the ATI cards can do it.

But with decent ammounts that would be noticeable It would be unplayable
