What TV shows are you currently watching

Been watching "Lessons in Chemistry" It's been pretty good and I'm usually not keen on period based stuff. Though Marvelous Mrs Maisel was another I enjoyed.

Waiting for the last two episodes, but so far I'd give it a 7.5/10

Seems like it's one-off mini series, but looks like it's something that they could run with for multiple seasons if they wanted, just like they have done with For All Mankind.

IMO Apple has definitely taken over as the most solid streaming service.

Got 'Tehran', 'Drops of God', and 'Bodies' lined up for after.

I'd like to know more about these special offers for Apple TV+. All I see on their webpage is a 7 day trial then 9.99 a month.

Are these codes you receive for free months or something from companies that can be shared?

I’ve had Apple TV+ for over a year now totally free with giveaways and what have you and never even launched the app! What’s so good about it?

Netflix used to be bold, daring, and experimental in its programming, and bought, or created some great shows. Dark is a good example of this. The OA, as example of something experimental, The Sinner as good quality drama etc..

Over the years it's reduced that kind of content and focused a lot on buying older shows, and producing more mass market reality TV type stuff, and mediocre 'tv style' films.

Apple seems to have taken up the mantel when it comes to show quality, especially in the visual department. It seems to be content with having a smaller but high quality catalogue of shows.

You get it free for 6 months each time you buy an apple device, perhaps that's what they are referring to.

Barclaycard give me a 5 month trial about 2 or 3 times a year, I make a new email address and take a new trial each time. They also offer apple music, fitness and some other stuff but only have interest in the TV.

Really?

I know everyone has personal taste but apple is the last service I'd subscribe to.

Maybe I need to check it out. I've never tried it.

That's a strong position when in the next sentence you say you've never tried it. :)

I was quite dismissive initially as well, it's Apple and they're money grabbing buggers ;) However there is a consistent high quality to their shows and feels like they've got solid writing teams behind most of their content.

Silo, Black Bird, Severance, Slow Horses, For All Mankind, parts of Foundation are all excellent - there are others as well, these are the ones that initially spring to mind. I've not seen much on Netflix/Prime/D+ that comes close to these shows in years.

Disney + has also been good over the last month. I’ve finished watching Culprits and Welcome to Wrexham, started the Brawn GP documentary (brilliant so far) and have added a murder at the end of the world to my watchlist.

With apple there seems to be different types of codes, I've had it for ages without paying also (6 months I guess I "paid" for my phone), a couple of 3 month promotional offers they emailed me, then I tried to add one more of those and it told me I was at max allowed. After that there was a think on hukd for some months (5 or 6 i think?) with a bank (I forget which, I dont have an account with them though) so i clicked that link and it worked..

I mean I've looked at the content "best animations/sci fi/fantasy on apple" and not really found much.

But I've never subbed to it.

But if there are free trials going around it can't hurt. Netflix has its dry spells where I dip into another. D+ only lasted 2-3 months it had so little good stuff.

I've mentioned a few of my favourites above, they are all widely well rated too, except maybe Foundation, has moments of absolute excellence let down by a few shoddy actor choices.

Others highly rated I haven't seen - Ted Lasso, Servant, The Morning Show

I think time dependent, you could easily make a sub last 2 or 3 months before you ran out, not sure how fast you watch shows though.

I'm not championing Apple BTW - I just think it deserves more of a look in than the casual brush off it gets from a lot of folk.

I'm on a few years long Netflix dry spell, only 3 or 4 shows of note in that time I really rate (I maintain a sub for wife/son) :( Shame as maybe pre-2018, it was excellent, now it's just a content factory, loads to watch but no 'heart' in any of it - it's all painfully formulaic - same with a lot of Prime offerings too.

Let me say though, since having a child in 2017, viewing time is limited and I have no patience for 'average' TV anymore. If you can binge watch shows, it hides a lot of the faults, you see everything and take in little. When you've got 2 or 3 days between episodes the problems shine and you're hesitant to go back to something that's just 'alright' - Netflix/Prime is the epitome of 'average/alright' No doubt if I had hours/days to burn in succession, i'd be able to consume a lot more on their platforms and wouldn't be so critical.

Don't get me wrong, they have standout shows, they are just fewer and further between these days as opposed to the Netflix glory days.

One of the things I like about Trakt, I can quickly see which services are of more value to me (I don't necessarily watch a show through the service itself...)

This is for 2023 so far -

I'm definitely not an Apple fan in any way, but there are certainly some good shows in there -
