What TV shows are you currently watching

I’ve just made my way through all of Attack on Titan.

If you haven’t heard of it, it’s about a ‘medieval / steam-punk’ human civilisation under siege from grotesque human-like monsters called, you’ve guessed it, titans.

It’s told from the perspective of the resistance military, who have the benefit of some ultra-cool weaponry which allows them to fly through the air like acrobats.

I’d say it’s 50% Saving Private Ryan, 50% Game of Thrones… 100% Japan. Yep, it’s an ‘anime’, which might put some people off but l’d still say the show as a whole is absolutely solid - well worth the investment of time.

Pros:

- Generally likeable characters (or characters you love to hate).

- Harrowing intense action, hence the Saving Private Ryan comparison.

- Lots of mystery and intrigue as the characters try to understand the secrets of the titans.

- plenty of moral ambiguity (which escalates into the main theme in the later seasons).

- a pleasing wrap-up that’s quite different from the usual ‘goodies win’.

Cons:

- occational pacing issues caused by flashback sequences and lengthy internal monologues (which are particularly annoying just when things are ramping up).

- plot devices that increase complexity are delivered terribly at times, with some real ‘wtfbbq!’ moments (in a bad way) - when these happen your best bet is just to keep on watching and pick it up as you go, as they tend to ‘explain things in more detail’ later anyway.

My overall extent of recommendation: 9/10

THe 3 part netflix thing "American nightmare". Netflix does this docu-drama thing really well, and this one is no exception. I didn't know the story going in. Only 3 episodes but found it very compelling viewing.

Half way through season 2 of Reacher - not bad but nowhere near as good as season one. Thankfully he's solo in most of the books, he doesn't need a team of elite soldiers with him.

Finished it at the weekend. Meh. Didn't really do it for me and I can't say exactly why. Given the premise is terrorism and politics I can't help but be nostalgic for 24 which was much more compelling. I certainly wasn't waiting for each episode to drop on a Friday.
