So I have had to move into shared housing for now, good thing is that there is wifi but the usb wifi dongle I have (TP-LINK-TL WN727N 2013 Version) doesn't seem to giving me good speed sometimes its crawling, If I use my Android Tablet im getting around 50mbps. I don't want to spend a lot of money but something that will get my speed back up.

Thanks guys, forgot to mention the House is owned by the council so I dont have access to the router, they have even blocked adult sites. I'm sure my dongle has had it as it gets really hot.

Make a dish for it out of tin foil. I used to do that before to steal neighbours wifi. Also can use a metallic strainer.

O I like a bit of diy lol worth a try....

TBH the best I've found really for overall reliability and simplicity is the TP-LINK TL-WN722N* - some of the other 7xx variants are pretty naff though. I'd recommend getting one of those WiFi boosters you plug into a mains socket and can connect to via Ethernet rather than USB though as personally my experience has been much better speeds and reliability than any USB dongle.

* It won't set any speed records but I've found speeds reasonable but it seems to hold a signal well, low latency as far as WiFi goes and the antenna is removable with an SMA socket so you can use an upgraded external antenna if desired to get better results.

I will look into those boosters but do you have to connect to the router?

Cheers, will be looking into VPN, Don't know how long I can stick being here there two gamers who live here who is stealing all the bandwidth:mad: still better than being on the streets or living in some rough area.

Something new learned, Last night for a couple of hours the the ping was at 100 with very little download speed 1-2mbps and no upload at all, It could have been a blip in the connection, or someone watching 4k Netflix etc...

I ordered the TP-LINK TL-WN722N, Went cheap for now just to see what happens, as I'm getting better speed on my Tablet.

I got zero upload speed and 1-2 mbps was the maximum I got. Yesterday was the only time it had happened so maybe it was a glitch in the router /isp.

I haven't been there long enough to get to know the people so Yes it could be torrents.

I don't get it I got the TP Link one and I just don't get a decent download speed, On my android Tablet i'm getting 54mbps.

Are you using the USB extension that comes with the dongle to try and get a better position? could be a driver issue on your PC maybe.

Yes I first used the extension had it everywhere but still the same and no difference without it either, I shall load the driver that came with it and see if that makes a difference cheers.

Oh god, move house immediately or install a VPN. How do you live man!

Only been here a week but it's hard;) VPN will be the way once I can get the speed issue fixed.

Could be the printer isn't anything to do with me, It's a strange house as the council has a room/office in this house so it could be something to do with them. I will have to try the other usb ports, Must be something to do with the computer because if I put my Android Tablet on the floor or anywhere I still get 50mbps.

Tried all USB ports and it's still the same, I do have a upload problem sometimes it's not even getting 1mbs most I get is 2mbps, I was getting near enough 10mbps last week, I'm wondering if the council have throttled back everyones upload.

EDIT: I'm now getting 47mbps on speedofme website.

EDIT: Spoke to soon

What does this suggest when I first put my pc on I get good speeds but then after 5 minutes it slows down, if I unplug the usb dongle and put it back in then I get my speed back up again, but after 5 minutes it slows down again.

I recommended the following https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...00-bluetooth-4.2-pci-e-adapter-nw-10a-as.html currently on sale also, built in bluetooth incase you decided to get a bluetooth keyboard / mouse.

One thing I like about the ASUS range is that the antenna's can be mounted away from the PC.

Cheers have it up and working and now getting a constant download speed of 55mbs when other people are in, Just got to figure out why the upload is slower than a snail sometimes not even getting 1mbps if i'm lucky i get 2mbps.

I haven't asked the council they just said it was fast, When I moved in a month ago the upload was great getting about 10mbps but now it's slow, I'm not really bothered about the upload just handy having it a bit faster to upload pictures.

I thought it was at first someone taking most of the upload but it's always like that, I think it's most likely the council has throttled the upload, can they just do the upload without it affecting the download speed?
