What was the last game that surprised you?

In a non-attack way.

I start this thread because I picked up Mount & Blade: Warband in the last Steam sale on a whim and all I can say is what the hell man, where did the time go? Did not expect to enjoy it this much, thought it looked a bit like War of the Roses or Chivalry, games I kinda enjoyed but didn't quite hit the medieval sweet spot for me, but Warband is unbelievable fun.

The last game that took me by this much surprise was probably, I don't know, the first Witcher?

Anything surprised anyone lately? I'm talking about games you don't hold out that much hope for, but that subsequently blow your balls off.

I'd never heard of Warband so went and bought it. Now I see that in addition to it capturing my soul in the first session, there are LOTR and Warhammer mods. Oh, and Star Wars.

I officially hate you for ruining my life.

Planetside 2, I know I'm a bit late to the party with this one, as I only just started playing it a couple of weeks ago.

Saw it was free on Steam, installed it just to take a look, as I played the first a bit and thought it was "ok", expecting to install it after an hour or 2 due to a game full of idiots lone wolfing and pay-to-win microtransactions.

I was actually very pleasantly surprised, the only things you <need> to spend real money on are cosmetics like different camo and armour appearances; everything else you can earn points for in game. Also the more advanced weapons aren't really "better" than the default free ones, so with the noob weapons, you're still very competitive.

Also, people are far more organised than I expected, sure you get people running round doing their own thing, but every session I've played, I've been able to join a squad/platoon with a leader who uses tactics and issues orders, and players who (mostly) actually follow them!
