House price crash
Immagration
Lord of the Rings
Mobile phones
Web 2.0 (Google, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook...)
House price crash won't happen before 2010

Terrorism, American Imperialism, dodgy Indie clogging up the charts alongside manufactured pre-created pop music, Web 2.0, ID theft, global warming, Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Harry Potter, the death of nu metal, the rise of "emo-punk", reality TV, MMORPGs, the HD revolution and up until next Wednesday, Labours political regin powered by spin, a dodgy dossier and the erosion of civil liberty.

EDIT: Oh, and the increase of racial tension and "chavs"/"neds".

There has definitely been no defining music in 00's... just watching that seven ages of rock... and i think we need another alternative music scene tbh...

Watched that and watched part of Glastonbury tonight and I agree 100%. In some respects I am fortunate enough to be a kid who got into Music in the 80's and then along came groups like Nirvana, Soundgarden etc etc in the 90's. There music had meaning and was absolutely relevant to the time. Nowadays You could put any one of a hundred bands to play another groups songs and it was sound exactley the same. It's just manufactured with no meaning.

For me the 00's were all about bringing people together under the banner of techonlogical and social advancement. Yet we seem further apart than ever through failed politicians, failed social experimentation and the further breakdown of community. It's also been a decade of mistrust and cynicism from Government down to citizen up. We look at people to judge them on how different we are from them rather than what we have in common.

Quite a lovely image the 00's have been given...

Its a bit depressing really.. gotta be the worst decade ever.. even the 30's and 40's was probably better

I must have overslept the day 60 million people got killed in a world war.

We have been split apart as "people"... we have been left with cynical views, suspicion etc...

There is nothing that can unite us as a nation anymore... its all been ripped apart.

The music is dire, i want a band to come along with some balls and write some lyrics that discuss this. Lets have some non political correctness songs... just to really shake things up because they are really stale at the moment in music...

But as for everything else in society its all a mess...cynicism, no trust, fear... real lack on control

Yeh, for what...

My grandad was right when he used to say what was any real point when he went down south to see some radged idiots burn flags in this country

These are all insignificant things compared world war, or the cold war where you literally didn't know if the world would even exist in 6 months time.

Seriously, its not worth getting all emo about.

If you think that there has been no defining music (and maybe from a mainstream point of view, thats true) then I suppose you should look harder.

Why's he getting Emo ? It's a very valid point he makes I feel. Musicians and bands used to be representative of the feeling of a community or nation. Nowadays they very rarely step off safe ground with their choice of lyrics and their ever so bland music

Defining music doesnt stay in the little pubs... If it stays and dies there it wasnt that defining was it?

Also not being emo about anything, emo is another load of tripe that has somehow turned into something ridiculous in the last few years

Yeah but it's something that still there and really needs to be fixed, it's bad in the long run if it keeps up.

Yes, feeling sad about music is just as tough as the threat of worldwide thermonuclear war.

Watch "Threads" and tell me we don't have it better today than 25 years ago.

If the content of the charts is the reason why you think the world is such a terrible place i respectfully suggest that you have your priorities just a little mixed up.

If anyone watched the BBC series on modern Britain (going from post ww2 to now) they would be eating their words about these last years being "bad"

I disagree. It is often the bands that live and die in pubs that end up influencing artists who go onto achieve further greatness. Just because a band is small and their influence isn't readily apparent at the moment, doesn't mean that'll still be the case in 5 or 10 years time. At that point, various artists will look back on the bands and see them as being influencial. I think that Refused are a prime example of this and I think you can tell the diffrence between band that will be remembered and be seen as influencial in the future as opposed to bands who just happened to be there at the time.

You think that bands like Green Day were influenced only by bands like The Clash and the Sex Pistols? They were more influenced by other smaller bands that many people give near legendary status now.

I appreciate what you are saying :)

Yes it is a low priority, but its just a long list of things that are dull in recent times... and its one medium especially in our society that changes things and reflects times... at present it doesnt do any.. within the mainstream.

But as for other prioritys, world affairs too.. its all a tad tripe too...

Life was probably a lot simpler post ww2 that it is now... how can that be denied? (50's 60's)
