I had my first driving lesson yesterday at age of 23,the lesson was for 1 hour and 30 mins.I have never driven a car before so it was totally new to me,apart from driving on GTA or forza which didn't help lol.He told me about how the car works and what things do ect, then he got me to start the car and to pull away.I wasn't sure at first about the biting point he was keep talking about, but after a couple of attempts i understood what he meant.I was cackin myself when we pulled away because in this industrial estate there was these lorry's and trucks keep pulling out ect.

When the instructor said check your left mirror for some reason i was checking my right mirror lol, then when he said ok now pull to the side, and he said ease off the gas and push in clutch then ease break,at that moment i nearly put him through the windscreen lol,we did this a couple of times and on the final time when i stopped i hit the curb :( the problem i was having was i found it hard to keep a steady speed and also getting everything in the right order to pull away.I found it really off putting for my first lesson but i want to drive so i am going to stick with it.

My first lesson went quite well. It was an hour long and we managed to get around 15 minutes of driving in. After that it was driving every second for each lesson afterwards :)

Although I was kind of bricking it when I pulled away :D

Sounds normal to me. I first drove a Maxi when I was 14 and just couldn't stop stalling. When I was 17 and learning properly, the first few lessons are based on learning to make the car go forward. Once you get the hang of that it's then about being safe on the road. The learning curve is quite steep but keep at it, it gets easier with time to the point that's it's easier to drive than it is to operate some bloody washing machines. :)

don't worry about it, it always starts out as being confusing - theres so much to keep in mind, keep checking etc etc. After practice you start doing most of the mechanical stuff (peddles, gears, steering) automatically and you can get on with knowing whats going on around you. Once you have that sorted you can start trying to predict what all the other numpties are going to do... but thats much further down the line :D

Get as much practice in as you can, even driving around a small space (like a driveway) will help you get used to a car :)

Learning not to use the clutch as a on/off switch was my hardest in a 1.0 micra!
I'd been use to driving tractors around college where stalling is not really a problem!

I had my first lesson on my 17th birthday, I grew up in North Yorkshire and my instructor just took me to some country lanes near my house and swapped over. I’d driven a little bit before on farms etc. We spent an hour driving around the lanes it was at night as well.

I was picked up at 7:00pm on a winters evening.
Driven to a village down the road which has a ring road that runs all the way around the outside.
So there in cold conditions and in the dark I was told "OK - you get into the drivers seat now".

Scary is probably the best description but very exciting too.

Superb first lesson. I'd driven before and the instructor was aware of this (and was confirmed when he examined my car control before we "set off").

After that it was a drive out down some country roads to another nearby town, and back again. Some 30, some 40 and some NSL limits. He also wanted me to overtake a tractor, but I wasn't confident enough at the time.

First lesson was pretty good.

Parked up in a retail area, swapped with the instructor, checked miorrors, indicated and set off nice and smoothly no kangarooing at all. Got to a right turn, slowed down, entered road fine and acelerated again, get to a mini roundabout, instructor tells me to turn right - no cars, slow down a bit turn right - RIGHT UP ONTO THE GRASS VERGE! Didn't turn the steering wheel enough - instructor let me do it to show me what happens - not dangerous as no one else was around but it was the mini roundabout outside the college I was attending at the time -I could have died with embarrassment.

Other than that, the rest of the lessons went fine and passed first time after my 10th lesson.

I got into 4th gear in my first lesson :O

I found it tough though, most / all people find it a bit strange.

You'll get used to it even if you never think you will.

driving is different from a lot of things I find. I'm still learning but have my drivers test next week. Basically it is something you need to keep doing to stay good at. When you are learning the more time you have away from it the longer it takes to get to grips with it. It's taken me literally a year to get my test put in, because I have had so many gaps between lessons due to various things going in my life.

My first lesson sucked and I was a pretty poor learner in truth.

There is light at the end of the tunnel though as since passing my test I have become a driving legend...

Horrific.

I pottered around an industrial estate in second and had a chav in a white RS Turbo on my boot getting aggressive, for no reason.

It also dawned on me that car steering was somewhat different the way it's portrayed in Gran Turismo.

First lesson which involved no previous driving whatsoever was practise clutch control a few times talking about general road rules and stuff which I knew a lot about then heading out onto the roads for about 45mins of 2 hour lesson. Stalled a fair few times but picked it up quite quickly, she commented I was very good once I got going. Not as nerve racking as I thought, and I couldnt wait for my next lesson.

my first lesson was 1hour of which 55minutes was me driving :o

He took me to a 60mph road thats nevery busy (and very wide lines/viewing area) pulled up on the side and told me how to move off etc, afte a view goes i got used to it, then we just kept doing a circuit with a free corners/stops etc

I just remember pulling off in 1st, thinking "woooahhh I'm driving :D :D" then going for 2nd, looking down at the gearstick, fishing around, not finding 2nd anywhere, looking up and finding myself on the wrong side of the road!! That's when the instructor grabbed the wheel ;).

about as bad as i expected, but i found i felt like i wasn't progressing, then after about 10 hours i realised i was (more or less) doing it all without thinking.
