What watch do you wear?

After a long time of deliberating and going backwards and forwards; Today I caved in and ordered a Speedmaster .005 Ref.

What pushed me over the edge is that I have no love for the new 2021 Speedmaster model and this is now what Omega are pushing. My no love for it is purely due to the complete change in movement, goes against the history of the watch IMO. I know the .005 isn't the exact movement from 1969. I get Omega want to give the Speedmaster a refresh, but I think that it takes away from the history and magic of the Speedmaster and they are offering no alternative. Who knows if / when Omega may put something out like the .005 ref again, which is (I'm laughing inside) - somewhat an affordable model.

Crazy amount to spend on a watch, but ah.. I've always felt a strong connection to this watch.

I get a free watchwinder though for a watch that can't make use of it, which is obviously very nice.

I've already cleared out a whole room to fit the big box in ;)

Congrats fella. Always a nice feeling to get the 'grail' watch you've been after. Nice you got the original too, I concur with all that you've said. Watch winder is a funny one to get thrown in with it, isn't it :p I saw a couple go for 50ish quid on eBay if you want to recoup some cost :o

Thanks man :). It's a grail for me, for sure. Not too sure when it will get to me, it could be over the weekend or next week. But it's ordered now so can relax and continue to spend time watching YT videos on it to increase the hype. When I was a child I was obsessed with watches, all digital mind. Some things never change.

What do you mean? But.. But.. Those winders are worth £230.. :D

The idea of a winder has never entered my head as I rotate what I wear way too often. If in some other universe I were a two watch automatic owner kind of guy, a winder would definitely make sense. :D

The Solent looks nice, Pacific would be nice too if they hadn't made that horrendous design decision of keeping the 6 but allowing the second dial to cut off half of it

It is indeed strange, I've seen both small and big brands do this chopping Arabics in half thing before too with no idea on why they do it!

Nice one, a classic Speedy is the way to go for sure! Expecting many pics when it arrives

Speaking of classics, my tastes have most definitely shifted from modern dive watches to timeless classic designs, I've just sold the Laco Aachen 39mm as realised today being out and about all day with the Stowa that it is my go to Flieger and I don't need another. The size is spot on plus my mission to have an all hand wind collection geared me toward the Stowa Marine Classic 36.

Same dimensions as my bronze but in a marine nautical theme. I will opt for the Roman numerals, no date and hand wind movement which is the same top grade as in the bronze. All for under £900. Not buying right away just want to have a bit of breathing space and enjoy the bronze for a while.

The only thing I was not sure about is the polished case, like leather straps, I hate polished cases but have seen it stated by TGV in the Urban Gentry review that you can simply request a brushed or sandblasted case finish even though it's not an option on the website and they will do it for you so blasted is what I'll likely get as something a little different and unique.

Shall definitely be taking some pics when it arrives :)

Fliegers definitely have my interest. It's a style of watch I've never had in my collection previously and after owning the Khaki field, I have grown to enjoy minimalistic dials. Something I've also discovered since owning the Khaki is how much I enjoy the winding process of a mechanical. Quite a few see it as a downside, a watch not being automatic, but I find it to be an engaging process; literally, you are keeping the watch alive with winding and nothing else, something nice about that.

Ah TGV! I remember when a friend of mine first introduced me to him about 4 years ago, I thought he was a bit up himself and didn't bother to watch anything else of him. I'm a bit more tolerant of him since then. He does put out good content, just need to see through and accept his persona, which I found a bit sleazy at first.

If any watch should be a hand wind then it's definitely a flieger or field. Hamilton's winding action is really satisfying as you have seen as we have the same movement, the Selita in this Stowa is very nice too but isn't as audible as the Hamilton's H50 but is made up for by the onion crown which is really satisfying to turn. There's a springiness to the turn action too, each turn results in a slight jolt backwards by a springy clutch-like force which takes a moment to get used to.

Yeah TGV is definitely one of those people who at first glance you might think is a bit up themselves but really once you watch a few of his videos and especially when he does talks with others in the industry you realise he's just himself, a good dude who is extremely thorough with his research and views. I also really enjoy the historical intros to eery review he does pretty much.

This is the Marine Classic review I was on about:

Don't wear one partially due to work policy and secondly rather redundant now.

How are they redundant? Can you glance at your phone? No you have to dig around in your pocket and pull it out first. Also, it's not just about telling the time. It's about owning something that's a mechanical marvel and piece of design excellence.

Aye. I used to be one of those people who were like “why do I need a watch when my phone tells the time” but it’s more than that. It’s more than just telling the time.

I've been playing around with watch photos again as this crystal is really cool in a challenging way to photograph.

Bit like stone island attire
Stone Island as a company is rediculously innovative. We'll see what happens under Moncler ownership, but snubbing the brand, presumably just because of the yob association is short sighted. It's expensive as well as long as you aren't buying it from the market :p

It's something you have to own to understand.

Is it? Or is that what you tell yourself? Not being confrontational if that tone is being conveyed, honestly. I have close friends who own various luxury brands. Lets say "Premium" luxury brands. Are they nice? Sure. Handling one I can't say I'd feel anything other than buyers remorse after having it though. Of all the "Premium" brands I also find Rolex to be the most dull. I'd rather have a Patek Philippe (though they're another level) or perhaps a Vacheron Constantin. If I was given it for free ;).

But in that case I guess I just don't get it. There are lots of things I don't get though so that's fine! My attitude to most things is there are things I can afford but I simply I can't convince myself that the "premium" price for the "premium" brand is worth the incredibly marginal (if any) improvements over other, very good brands. The watches are absolutely superb, but so are many others. I'm not trying to be contrary, honest :D.

I entirely understand someone who says all you need is a Casio. But at the same time I want something "better". So it's just what I'm comfortable with I guess. It's subjective in many ways.

I do believe in a massive level of diminishing returns though! And I have a real problem with any form of false scarcity.
