I want some of what they're smoking ;)

I just ordered a package from them, lets see how it keeps up ;) Although for the amount of things you get it works out pretty cheap

Apart from my mini-rant you're right though, they do oversell horribly but they're a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge company and a very good one, too

They're not that big...

Dreamhost posted a nice blog post about how they have to oversell to possibly compete, but since most people don't use it they're fine - and since they have the hardware to back up most people using their full capacity, and are prepared (and able) to add more if they need to, they're better than most companies who oversell.

Not compared to Walmart, no, but 700 servers / 200k websites does allow for a sustainable huge-numbers strategy (or seems to, they haven't gone bust yet :D)

Maybe I should've put more u's in my Vodafone huuuge :)

Ok after reccomendations from Sirrel Squirrel and some others, i think i'm gonna go with register1.net

but i need one question answering first.

vdsug0.jpg

the standard package is the left hand column for £49 a year, the pro package is the right for £99 a year, you also get more bandwidth and more space on the pro package.

but all those things there that the standard doesnt have compared to the pro, can someone please explain what these are please :)

there HAS to be a catch.....

and can some please answer my above question :p

many thanks

EDIT: btw thats £5 A MONTH not yearly....

ah reread.

Hmmm na theres gotta be a catch there somewhere, that deal seems to good to be true. like they charge you double the normal rate next year or something. hmmm gotta be a catch....

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Renewels are expensive.

About Register1.net - do you really need to spend £99 or even £49? If you don't know what all those things are, you probably don't need them.
Tshost is £15 a year and it has everything you need for a personal website (or even a small business).

The price does go up for the next year, true, but I'll bet you can simply re-order with another offer code :p

Apart from that, no catch so far as I know. They're a good bunch.

Anyway if I'm not careful I'll be doing myself out of business so I'm off :p

i was just going on the fact about how EVERYone says how blisteringly fast the downloads are from register1.net

Ok i'm having a look with different hosting companys at the minute in the mean time can somebody please answer my question about the different packages in the above post. Thanks :)

Ok thinking about going through the signup process how do you get this promo code for the $9.95 a year?

There will be a difference if you're loading lots of images on a page, because Dreamhost has a ~150ms ping wheras any company located in London should have a 10 - 20ms ping time, which makes a difference when you start loading lots of images :)

Also the different things there - they're just script autoinstallers for stuff like blogs, CMS software, forums etc - nothing much, but possibly handy if you'd like to mess about without manually installing. Most companies will provide such things - not sure about Dreamhost though.

They are just 'quick install' applications, you can still install them yourself on the standard package, but on the Pro you just click a button and they are installed.
