What would be better Quad or Dual core?

Me and my friend both want to upgrade our PCs before the summer is out.... or begins. Now we were talking, what is better to go for, dual core or jump straight in for Quad core. I plan to overclock and he doesnt. The only things we need are the motherboard, Ram (I've always been a G.skill fan ;)) and obviously the CPU.

We were looking at the low end Q6600 is it? The energy saving one. Now, for a start what current intel boards are top rated for overclocking for around £100 ~ £130 and what G.Skill ram would compliment this, is there a main advantage for anything above PC6400?

Thanks in advance.

To be honest, its not all that simple deciding whats best, theres pro's and cons for each and it really depends what your doing.

For example if your just using it for current generation gaming, then the additional 2 cores isnt really all that needed and the higher clock speeds of the C2D would be more usefull , but if you want the best performance in future software more cores will be better.

What youve also got to think of is that the quad cores arent really quad cores yet, there 2x dual cores, so the native quad cores that will be released in the future will probably be a bit better ( more efficient, cooler).

Its really a case of swings and roundabouts

I'm a gamer and I do some video editing. Hmm I'm just looking for a power increase over my AMD Opteron 146.

Either way what is a good motherboard for the Intel chips for Ocing at the moment? I was looking at DFI/ASUS/Gigabyte. Any suggestions.

MilZ the Gigabytes av good reviews for high OCing and performance, i ordered the DQ6 as it was rated one of the bests!

just google some reviews!

All that only comes to £380! Wow. Hmm what else could I buy. I think my Zalman 9500 will surfice....once I find the intel bracket ^_^;

Hmm. Assuming when payday comes I can spend another £70 what else can I put into my new rig.

My current rig is (without CPU Ram and mobo.

Tagan 500w PSU.
Leadtek 7800GT.
250gb WD Hdd.
DVD-RW
Zalman 9500.

What else can I upgrade.

Am I seriously going to need the Super huge one >_>;

Also the fact the P35 chipsets are Crossfire isnt going to affect the fact im using an Nvidia card?

Also my case is falling to bits, that would be a nice thing to upgrade. Whats good for airflow? I Like having my side windows :p

A few people I know are telling me to go for the Asus P5W DH Instead. Is there any major differences? Apart from price?

Asus P5W DH is an older chipset. If your going to go for a Motherboard get one of the newer chipset boards, the P35 Series:

They support Intels upcoming 45nm Processors, very reliable, rock solid, much better memory tolerance, great overclocking boards.

So my question is now.

Asus or Gigabyte on the P35 chipset, I can't find a review website with both boards on. Also I would like it to be one with DDR3 Support ^_^

DDR2 and DDR3 support - Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
I think thats the only motherboard that can currently support both.

There are also a few that only support DDR3 memory.
