What would have happened if the terror plot was not foiled?

So why aren't the army permanantly stationed round airports?

It's a good question, mainy i suspect because it'd look stupid after a while, and because the government is a big fan of doing something to prove that it's doing something.

Nest time you fly anywhere, take a look down at the ground after take off, odds on in the first half mile or so there is somewhere somebody could park up, get his shoulder launch missile out of the boot and take a shot at an airliner. At that point it would be very vulnerable to such an attack.

One day, probably not so far away, terrorists are going to bring down an airliner and kill hundreds of people, there is very little we can do about this unfortunately.

would have kept ITV news happy though....

then they could have really gone to town with their dramatised reports...

now lets discover the true evil that was....."bottles on a plane"

Yeah but was anything prevented? No one was ever caught. If there were planning and capable they would have done it a few weeks later when the tanks went home. They didn't.

Maybe the intelligence services found the information to be false in the meantime. Given the information they couldn't just do nothing (although what they did was cosmetic and may not have stopped the terrorists carrying out such an attack.)

what would have happened?

there would have been the knee jerk 'im never flying again' mentality... then 6 months later everything would be back to normal as the events of exploding passenger aircraft slips from our minds and we focus on nice weekend breaks in st tropez and barcelona lol...

Because we do not live in a military state.

So why was it acceptable then for security reasons?

And if it was acceptable then why isn't acceptable the rest of the time? Any successful attack will likely happen when there is no prior warning.

No doubt the current "no hand baggage" rule will be reverted in a couple of weeks time. No longer a security threat? I doubt it.

When will people understand that the police/govt are not in a position to just sit back and do nothing if they have any info pertaining to a threat.

Sadly , a lot of people have the power of hindsight .

The police /govt are criticised for reacting to a supposed threat , and criticised for not reacting.

The sooner we actually take things seriously and support our security services then we might , just , make a step forward.

There is a big difference between a show of force for a short time and a permanant military presence...........

If police get a report of a gunman at a shopping centre, they would send armed police there. However, the armed police would not stay forever.........

Anyway, Jokester and clv101, thanks so much for turning this thread into yet another "OMG the government is deceiving us all" thread :)

People will always want to fly, initially flights will go down but people will become more confident very quickly.... Flying is essential in this day and age

How did I manage to do that? All I'm saying is that I expect this to be yet another non-event terror-plot. I certainly don't think John Reid devised this whole debacle as an intentional deception.

Because I asked what people think would happen if planes were blown up, not if people think this was a real threat or faked.

Doesn't matter, was just saying......

Mal :)

I would expect there to be a backlash on the general Muslim community. Sad but true. Treat the Minority differently then they won't feel welcome and as a consequence things will get worse!

The aviation indusrty would probably be completely destroyed, US airlines would get even more money from their govt and the economy would go down the pan?

I would imagine there would be questions as to why airport security is still so lax (not that I agree with the extremity of the current hand luggage ban).

I thought my first response was pretty fair... I did answer the original question but added some context to my answer. :)

As I pointed out in my other thread, you could ban hand luggage entirely and still get enough explosive onboard to take a plane down.

Short of full cavity and subdermal searches for each and every passenger, it is impossible to prevent explosives or weapons being taken onboard.

Would you still fly if you had to have your holiest of holes probed each time you went through customs?

Would you still fly if you had to go under the surgeons knife each time you went through customs?
