....George Lucas had made Star Wars Episode 1 instead of Episode 4 first?

Opinions?

I think it would've tanked at the box office, Lucas would've become the Paul WS Anderson of his day & there'd be no ILM, Lucasfilm, THX etc.

This thread got me thinking.

Regarding Anderson, I see nothing wrong with Event Horizon and Soldier, thought both were good shows, didn't mind the Resident evil early stuff either.

Lucas on the other hand, if Epi 1 was released, without the fact everyone knows he will be Vadar there would be absolutely no attraction to watch the film at all. The backstory is weak, dialogue very poor, and the whole plot unconvincing.
The jar jar bits would have been appualed by critics for a greta kids character, but they wouldn't have understood the atempt to have an adult storyline behind it.

I think Star Wars would have been a success if released 1-6, but they would be the sort of films you enjoy as a kid, but then grow out of. There wouldn't have been as many spin-offs that's for sure.

Edit: to expand on that a bit, I don't think the studios would have let Lucas release the storyline in 1-6 - it would have been modified to make it child friendlier.

It wouldn't of worked. They're supposed to be watched 4/5/6/1/2/3 and thats that. Imagine the big reveal in Empire if you've already seen the prequel trilogy? Fail.

I think without... THE music, Star wars wouldnt have been half the film it is today. more like battle star gallactica but a tiny bit less geeky...

Actually the story would have worked 1-6 because we wouldnt have known who Darth Vader was till ep3, then the whole "I am your father" would have taken on an whole different vibe as we see Ben lie to Luke and wonder when he is going to find out his father is alive.

Knowing Lucas and his passion for tech, ep1 would have been a success, the effects would have been a product of their time but still amazing.

Soldier? Seriously? Wow.

The guy is the absolute master of hammy dialogue. He's a woefully bad director with the sole exception of Event Horzion which is pretty decent, but definitely was better when I was younger.
