What would you call an average wage?

Minimum wage is 20k so the average cannot be 20k. 27k sounds low to me. I'd say average is circa 35k-40k if you took all the cash in hand into account.
27.8k is the average wage for the NE though and lowest in the UK.

8.72 is minimum wage? so 17k would be the minimum for a fulltime job?
20k would be 10.26 an hour

we could do with a poll on the forum if your earning under or over 30k but OCUK probably has more skilled workers than the average

You would be amazed at what some people earn. Like train drivers.

Folk earning min wage also tend to work several jobs and do overtime, etc.

You know all the folk who give a 20% discount for cash or folk who would normally charge £20 per tyre for changing them it's suddenly £10 a tyre cash so a 50% discount as it goes straight in their pocket and the owner never finds out.

The National Living Wage for those 23 years old and over is £8.91/hour. That doesn't give you £20k unless a full time job is now over 43 hours/week.

yea train driving is crazy money and must be pretty relaxing.

A friend of a friend used to drive the london tube but turned into an alcoholic after hitting a jumper, don't think he ever recovered from the incident

they are encouraging more female drivers up here though so what hope does a white man have.

It's far more than just for social interaction and tbh your statement is just showing you are viewing this about your needs (ie: you missed out on your daughter's early years) not what is best for the child. It's an understandable position and seen often with parents, but being at nursery is better for their entire development.

That's far from it. I know I can as well as the mother offer my children more than what happens at nursery. It is simple milestones but my daughter learned how to swim, ride a bike before the vast majority of her peers and she only did the 15 hours a week. She was also always top of her class so do not understand your argument tbh.

The average is getting inflated by the few people on really big wages. They often take the top 1% off the stats, but it's still inflated. Most people are going to be getting way less than the "average".

Annoyingly in this society the least important jobs pay the most, and if you want to do something outdoors (like e.g. Forestry or some kind of conservation) prepare for a **** wage. Even farmers, who all used to be loaded back in the day are struggling now.

Hit 2 and you get paid off for life apparently.

From reading your posts I am going to take a guess and suggest that the pay cut you took is at least double the average wage in the UK. Am I close?

As I said I don't want to be crass. But I'm in my 40s with quite a long career behind me so I'm probably not the typical demographic.

However I'm 100% happier with less income, my work life balance is better despite a more senior role and some non exec stuff as well. I actually get to spend time with my family which is actually worth every penny. I'm less stressed although sometimes random bills can come out and **** with that zen feeling! :D

The average wage isn't what anyone 'considers' it to be, because an average is something that gets calculated, not dreamt up in someone's imagination. Apparently the official average UK salary last year was £38,600, but obviously that could be broken down by region, demographic etc.

Yeah, that is presumably skewed by high earners, especially workers in London etc.. median might be better to look at.

If you are mortgage free, have no debt then I am sure most people would have a similar outlook to yourself. I am in my late 30's and would love to be in a position where I am able to get a lower paying less stressful job that allows me to spend more time with family also. However having to pay mortgage (in London) and childcare etc is all very expensive and neither me nor the Mrs can afford to cut back on the salary, if anything we are trying to up it so that we can afford a move out to a bigger house :(

Yup brother in law is a train driver, he’s on about £80k.

He needs to make the most of it while he can. Automated train drivers are coming to London according to the news article I read last night, although tbh given the tech we have now I don't see why they have not already implemented them.

I was driving my Rav4 the other day on the motorway (first time since upgrading) and was amazed at how good they managed to get automated lane assist now, when set to cruise control it was just driving itself, keeping to lane perfectly following road turnings etc. I was initially a bit nervous letting the machine drive itself at 75mph in a curve but after 30 minutes or so I was more confident. On the Journey back it was cruise control all the way back, still had to have hand on steering wheel though, but I could have browsed my phone with one hand and it would probably still do its thing.

Our joint household income is around £95k and I certainly wouldn’t say we feel that well off. Two kids (with related childcare expenses) and a fairly large mortgage takes up a fair chunk of our take-home!

He’s already moving up into more senior roles, currently he’s a trainer for new drivers.

We would be living like royalty if we had that income. before covid we were both working in a restaurant kitchen. Me fulltime and her part time (had 2 children then, now we have 3) we took home £1800 a month..
