What would you call an average wage?

Well we live in a Village 10 miles from Bournemouth and the average wage here is roughly £23k on the industrial estate we have.

I take just under £35k but it's with a company that distributes staff all over the area.

are wages really that low these days? Ive not earned under 40k for over 5 years,i assumed the average worker was not to far behind.

Just as a random calculation for you, if minimum wage is £5.52, there are 8 hours in a working day and 252 working days a year then you'd earn a salary of £11,128 pre-tax, that's quite shocking, surprised it's that low.

are there any tax credits and other things to help you though?

I would have thought around 20k was the average.

For a single person 30k is liveable, less for a couple going half's on everything

That's me :D I'm on placement for a year, with a salary of £11,500. I pay rent on a room in a shared house, at £400p/m, buy food etc. It is perfectly livable if you don't run a car, but I don't save anything whatsoever.

After uni however, I won't get out of bed for less than £20k, as a Software Developer who will by then have had a years experience.

Damn Polish!!!

My friends Sister got dropped on an interview for a bar job in the local pub/restaurant and a Polish girl got the job instead.

Found out afterwards that the Polish girl got the job because she would accept live in accomodation and a signed disclaimer to say she would work all the hours god gives.

Absolutely pathetic imo.

Nobody ever asks the question how many hours do you have to work for the average wage.

Here in Stoke if you're on £7 an hour you're doing very well.
However if you work 60 hours a week then you could be on average wage with overtime rate.
37 hours is a normal working week for me with 15 mins travelling to and from work.

I would be surprised if the local wage here in Northern Ireland is much more than £15000, we always seem to lag behind the rest of the UK where wages are concerned.

I started on about £11.5k and am now on about £14.5k. The problem is that the jobs that I want to do and am educated and qualified to do are all oversaturated so the salary is driven down massively. Im job hunting at the moment and if I get anything over £15k i'll be happy.
