With a £1k budget.

A 34 inch superwide curved monitor with a 970

Or

A 28 or so inch 4K panel with a 980Ti?

very much depends on a few variables, what sort of games you play, if i was spending a grand id personally stretch just a tiny bit more ad get a superwide 3.5k with 980ti

YOUR BASKET
1 x LG 34UM95-P 34" WideScreen Super-Wide LED Monitor £599.99
1 x Inno3D GeForce GTX 980Ti X3 Ultra 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (C98T3-1SDN-N5HNX) £509.99
Total : £1,109.98 (includes shipping : £0.00).

if the extra £100 is too much then id still get the 980ti and just knock the screen down to 1440p, where a 980ti will fly at high framerates in anything

1 x Samsung S32D850D 32" Widescreen LED Professional/Gaming Slim Bezel Monitor - Black (LS32D85KTSN/EN) £499.99
Total : £1,009.98 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

4K looks much better, it's worth the jump. And yes, a single 980 Ti can easily drive 4K, but a single 970 can't do Ultrawide as easily.

true, but 28inch is too small for 4k imo, you lose half the benefit

No. It's small for using a web browser. For gaming, everything is DPI scaled (unless it's a ridiculously old game). I use a DPI scale of 125% and sit 1 metre away. Looks amazing versus an Ultrawide I saw in person. Ultrawides will be useful when movies are presented in 21:9 or wider. Many games prefer 16:9, and 4K fits that ratio.

dpi scaling makes web browsing a non-issue unless your still using ie6, dpi scaling makes zero sense in games

i agree on the aspect ratio, id take 16:9 over 21:9 for gaming, which is why i suggested a 1440p 16:9 screen to stay within his budget, but it doesnt change that at 28" 2.5k and 4k are indistinguishable when gaming, unless your half an inch away, but 4k has the expense of more graphics grunt and therefore lower fps, id take a solid [email protected] at max settings rather than 35-45fps at 4k anyday, which is all your going to get in the latest games with a single 980ti, and i say that as someone who is using a 4k screen currently

What monitor you end up getting depends on what kind of games you play. If you are just an average gamer, who doesn't stick to one genre, 4k is fine - If you play a lot of FPS, I'd much rather get a 1440p, 144Hz monitor with G-Sync, if your budget stretches to that - If you play a lot of games around the racing genre, or where peripheral vision is important for your gameplay experience, 1440p Ultrawide is the way to go.

If you are after my personal experience: I used a 27" 4k and ended up switching to a 34" curved Ultrawide... Needless to say, I'm never going back to 4k. Using a single 980Ti, the gameplay is much better experience as it's 60% of the pixels to drive, which means you can use more eye candy - And it wraps around your peripheral vision a lot better.

As for Ultrawide curve vs flat, I couldn't imagine using an Ultrawide monitor without the curve, it's more than just a gimmick I promise.

I don't really play FPS. Although I'm looking forward to Star Wars battlefront. I also play world of warships, gta, total war, fsx and city builders. I imagine the superwides are mint for FSX.
