What would you do - Emmigrating question

My personal opinion :

You're young, you're single, and you have the backup of parents in Aus and a place/job in the UK. Hell, even your new car has the steering wheel on the correct side for both.

You're not packing WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?

Hey dont they play that game out there ... umm what ya call it ....

CRICKET ! .... runs for cover !

Oh and I'd hang tight in England and stick with what you seem to be enjoying , never know it could maybe lead to something bigger and that means more holidays out to Aussieville. :D

I'd go and see what you think.

My mum has been looking into moving to Aus and I really like the idea. Have never been though but really don't like this country to be honest.

I'm the same age as you, I'd take the chance, as mentioned you can always come back and I can't see the IT situation changing soon.

lol Mickey, you do make me laugh on these forums :p

Why am I not jumping to go?

I have my job, my friends, my LIFE in England...

I like I said, I like the idea of going but I don't want to quit my job and go there for 6 months, not like it, come back and not be able to find a job again etc.

Catch my drift?

EDIT: /Me wonders if I could continue my current job in Oz

Mickey has a point, do it. Everything will still be here should you choose to come back. It's probably 35+ degrees over there just now...

Dude, you stick around too long and you'll find a bird to settle down with, you'll pop out a sprog or two, then you'll NEVER get a chance to see anything of the rest of the world.

Trust me, get out there while you're still young enough to have fun with it!!

I'm pushing 40 now and would give my left testicle to have the opportunity you've got dropped in your lap!!

I had to join the Navy to even come close.

Your objections to going can be countered pretty quickly.
Job - you've gotten one, you can get another.
Friends - I've had so many friends in my life that I couldn't find now if I tried. There are very few people not blood related to you that would even try to keep in touch if you moved over there. The rest aren't friends, they're drinking buddies. They're a dime a dozen and can be found/replaced in a heartbeat. True friends wouldn't hold you back from an opportunity like this. They'd be stabbing you in the back to take it from you!! :p (j/k)
LIFE - it's what you make of it. It can either be confined to a tiny little point on this great big globe, or it can be spread all over the place and enjoyed to its fullest. Your choice.

I know what mine would be in your shoes. And it wouldn't leave much time for making a reply to this post between stuffing travel bags......

Ok Fair point. I'll give you that one

Well If I do move there I can think of about 10 people that WILL keep in contact as I would to them.

See now I've always wanted to go traveling the world is amazing and theres so much to see and imo so under appreciated etc.

I'll be the first to admit I'm getting on in years. I'll also point out that I'd drop everything like a bad habit if I could to do what you've been offered. But I no longer can. I've got a family to think about and a house to try and maintain.

Think about it, your dad's probably got a LOT more serious ties to the area than you do, and he's considering it.

Hrm? Tell you something? :)

Was only messing around mate :) I do appreciate the advice given :).

See the idea is there but nothing is definite yet.

But rest assured I'll keep you all updated.

Only one I can think of is his best mate moved out there 13 years ago.

But thats the only tie thing I can think of....

Been there, seen it, done it and don't regret moving to Australia one bit.

I presume your dad wants to go for a permanent visa. These are not easy to get and it also costs a fair bit of money, which is why if you get a chance like this to get permanent residency of Australia by going with your dad just now, then go for it. After a period of time in the country you can apply for citizenship, which will give you both a UK and Australian passport, allowing you to live and work in either country as and when you please.

If you want to do it when you are older it will cost you and you may not be successful, depending on what skills are required in the country at that time. You will need to pay for a skills assessment, pay for medicals and pay for the visa, which ain't cheap.

The grass is not always greener, however as I'm typing this I'm looking outside, there is not a cloud in the sky, a couple of parrots are sitting in my apricot tree and my pool is looking very inviting. You still need to pay bills and put up with all the normal things here, however it does seem to be a lot easier and less stressful when you are in Australia.

I did have such an opportunity.. to move somewhere entirely different for awhile, at the time for me it didn't really matter where... but I wouldn't exchange the last year for anything.

What's the worst that can happen? You can always go home if it doesn't work out :) Nothings forever :)

In saying that, you wouldn't swap 'em for the world ? :p

Heh, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've let go by. Hell, it was only about 7 months ago that a company came looking for me. They were offering $75K a year, company car, $25K towards house deposit, plus pay to move me (and the family).

But due to my son being autistic and where they wanted to move me to thought that the care of autistic children was done in an institution, I politely told them no thanks. No amount of money in the world is worth institutionalising my son for. If I didn't give a crap about my son I wouldn't be home schooling him myself!! :p

<--- Please note location.

Best move I ever made.

It's just a much better standard of living.

Yes you'll probably get paid more in England but what's the point in that if you can't enjoy it.

If you like the beach, the outdoors and cold beer then this is the place to be.

He said 'in Australia' not Tasmania :p

Why not approach your employer and ask for an extended leave of absence. Use it to get a real taste of Australia before committing to anything. Either way, you're in a very enviable position of having a home on both continents.

As for work, I would recommend Melbourne.

I've been here just over 3 months and I'm happy with my choice but my circumstances are very different with 5 kids and my wife's career to consider.

The best place to get advice is the BritExpats forum.
