So I am set on my build that I'm going to order very shortly -
i7 4770k
27" asus monitor vg278he
H100i CPU cooler
Corsair 760w psu
Z87 saber tooth mobo
Cm storm stryker case

I'll be keeping my current SSD, RAM and HDD.

The only thing that's stopping me from ordering is a choice of GPU, I was going to go with one of the 290/290x in stock but I have read a lot about the heat issues and ideally wanted a non-reference card but I hate waiting.

Should I wait for the non ref 290/290x or is there a recommended choice that's in stock.

How long do people actually expect it to be before they are in stock to buy, the non ref cards.

Thanks

Do we have any ideas when I will likely be able to get my hands on a 290/290x non ref?

Thanks for the thoughts guys, how come you would go with the 780?

Personal experience, though I've had plenty of AMD cards in my time. Overall, I just think Nvidia are better. However, that aside, I don't see the point in spending heaps more on a 780, when you can get a 290, reference or otherwise, for a good deal less (hence my link to a lower priced 780).

Last I heard, non-reference 290s will be with us in the new year, but don't quote me on that.

If you can not wait and I were you then I would order your listed parts now and use your old graphics card or the onboard GPU/CPU to get the PC up and running then wait for the non reference 290's.

What would I do? - I can tell you what I did.

In the lead up to Christmas, I bought a R9 280X - Tried it, it worked fine, with the occasional black screen issue - however, it just wasn't powerful enough so I sent it back.

I then bought two R9 290 (fist returned as it was faulty) - and the second had mega issues, tried everything to no avail to get it too work (lots of post on this forum and others), eventually gave up when Gigabyte informed me that it was probably a compatibility issue with my motherboard (R9 290 only have UEFI / Legacy bios compatibility?)

I was then in a bit of a quandary, I have been a long time supporter of ATI cards, going way back to my first rage card  So I had a difficult decision, but I made the jump to a Gigabyte GTX780 Ghz Windforce (it was on special offer for £11 more than a non reference R9 290) just before Christmas.

I can honestly say (and its difficult to say because of my long term support for ATI) that its the best thing I have done for a long time - the card just works without issue, the drivers work without issue, the card doesn't appear to have any compatibility issues and it doesn't run hot.

The Gigabyte 780 GHZ is such a brilliant card - though 1-2 people have had problem ones* most people's experience with them has been trouble free and aslong as you get atleast an average quality core the cooler is so good they boost to pretty much stock 780ti performance out the box and still have some overclocking headroom to boot.

* Seems to be a small number with sub-standard cooler mounting/construction judging by the symptoms.
