What X-Fi shall I go for?

if you use lots of out/in's then get the elite pro however if not then stick with the music version, they all have some ram (2mb) but i have yet to see something use the xram to great depth so dont buy it due to that.
also the fatality is total marketing bs

I use the breakout box for;

ps2/optical in
headphones
mic
electric midi piano
ipod for music changing whilst gaming/line in 3
phono input from turntable

Just get the Music version. I listen to a lot of music and movies and also play games on my 5.1 setup. The card is perfect! I don't think the 64mb RAM does much if anything, and I'd only recommend the top of the line model if you were using it for recording purposes.... The music version will be fine.

This may sound stupid, but could somebody tell me what on earth a break out box is?

Is it like a front bay you put on your desk for e.g. to plug your ipod and headphones in?

Basically, yea. Creative call it the I/O console.

The one bundled with the Platinum/Fatal1ty series that most people call "Front Bay" is I/O console.

The I/O console is quite a bit bigger than I expected though.
