It struck me when i was playing Tekken, that it was the first fighter i had played in years, and struggled to think of too many fighters that had been around in the last gen console's, when they were always required as a strong launch title previously (well, for the Saturn/PSX era anyway).

Did people simply lose interest in one on one combat? Tekken on the ps3 has really reinvogorated my interest in fighters.

I used to be a great fan of 1 on 1 fighting games but imo they are all pretty much the same thing and do get boring.

I have teken for the ps3 but if it was full price in the shops i would not of got this.

There have been a few released in recent(ish) times.

Tekken 5 on PS2
Soulcalibur 3 on PS2
Mortal Kombat : Deception on PS2
Dead or Alive 3 on XBox
Dead or Alive Ultimate on XBox
Dead or Alive 4 on 360
VF5 on PS3 :)

Im sure there are a whole lot more that im forgetting about.

The only fighting games I've enjoyed playing over the past few years is Soul Calibur and Tech Romancer, because they were different.

its only good if you have good opposition.. im hoping this generation of online gaming consoles will bring it back :D

bring on tekken and soul calibur

Tekken 6 arcade machines are going to have a striped down PS3 inside :D I know a lot of arcade machines actually had PS2's. This should make it so that it's custom built for the Cell and hopefully it will rock.

I owned and played DOA4 briefly but the only fighting game I've enjoyed from the past few years was Soul Calibre 2 for the XBox.

Yeah, I never really viewed it as a serious contender for some reason. Enjoyed the first one in the arcades... never played one on a console, though.

your sig should be made punishable under law by death and you better fix it before a mod nukes it

Last fighting game that kept my attention for longer then 5 minutes was Soul Calibre on the DC. I absolutly adored that game, I was actually pretty good with Knightmare. :D

Last game I tried was DoA4, I couldn't stand it.

Fighting games don't work well online because of latency. In FPS anything up to around 100ms (on a console FPS) is acceptable whereas on fighting games even 20 would be frustrating. SFII sucked because of latency on XBL but image a faster, more complex, game with parrying etc with any latency at all?

The best consoles for them 1 on 1 fighting games are the DC and PS2 I've found a heck of a lot of great games on them that I didn't notice on the other consoles. It's mainly the crazy japanese ones.

Here are some good PS2 games if you're into this genre.

Guilty Gear 2
Street Fighter Anniversay
Street Fighter Alpha Antholgy
KOF 2006
Soul Calibur II/III
Tekken
Bloody Roar 3/4
Virtua Fighter 4 (not played, have played 3 on DC)
Mortal Kombat
Melty Blood: AC
Onimusha Blade Warriors
Capcom Vs. SNK
Melty Blood: Act Cadenza
Garouden BreakBlow
DOA (never played, myself)
Marvel vs Capcom
Thrill Kill (PSX game - unreleased)
Killer Instint 1/2 (SNES, n64)

I doubt this genre of games would be suited online lagspikes would ruin it due to all the complex buttons, combos, etc

However if you just wanna beat the crap outta someone for no reason then these are the games for you. :)

I really enjoy DoA4 on the Xbox 360.
At first I thought that it was only OK but when I started to spend time playing it actually was a very good game.

I miss the fighting genre of the good ol PSX days. Loved the fighting game where your character could turn in to an animal thing .. along with the likes of Tekken and Soul Caliber

Snes had some classics.. Mainly Killer Instinct and Street Fighter II
