As the thread title says really .......

I was always a flight sim enthusiast. Bought just about every one that came out. Spent years flying Crimson Skies online in what was one of the best online gaming communities I have ever been involved with. There are still some diehards playing it on Gamespy despite it being the best part of 10 years old now !

The genre seems to have petered out altogether. Strange really when in Battlefield 2 online the jets are so popular it's hard to even get hold of one.

Last flight sim i played was Jetfighter 2 on my 286 Circa 91 it was ace :)

I know. Last decent flight sim I played was... well I can barely remember. Flight Simulator 4.0? I loved that game. Design your own plane :)

I used to play that online ww2 flight sim that was hosted on German servers, can't remember what it was but it was a really tough game. Good fun though.

Air Attack?

My friends racked up many, many hours on Wireplay with that game! I never got into it (and my mum's phone bill thanked me! ;))

It still play FS 2004 a lot. But I have to agree, it seems that its starting to level off atm.

Maybe 9/11 has something to do with the lack of new flight sims.
I wouldn't be surprised if CIA had a word with developers to halt further development on them.

It could be that with everyone wanting graphical perfection, they are simply far too expensive to produce now for what is probably a small hardcore (ish) market base.

Same way the DVLA are stamping down on driving games in an effort to prevent road deaths

Yea I can really see the CIA phoning up games developers around the world and telling them to stop making flightsims or they'll give them chinese burns.

People stopped making flight sims because of they dont sell well enough. Its that simple. Microsoft only even bother with their flightsim because they are in a position to do so, it's like a part of their heritage so they continue to throw cash at it because the development costs dont even matter to them.

People who make flight sims now do so out of love for the genre not for the money, apart from the guys who released enemy engaged II that was a cash in :)

I love flight sims, especially combat ones. I got Ace combat 6 for my 360 and just ended up flying around wishing I was playing it on my PC with my cougar and trackir. I heard MS will do a combat flight sim quite soon and that they really want to nail it this time and give the community something really worthwhile so I'm looking forward to that.

Play FSX sometimes, but play WWIIOnline quite a bit - the air game in that is very good, lots of large bomber raids and multi fighter dogfights happening over ground battles below - and they just re-did the sounds for the latest patch merlin engine sounds awesome.

Go look through the forthcoming release lists and tell me how a genre that doesn't sell well enough manages to have so many addons come out as payware every month.

Woot! Another battleground europe player! What side do you play as? I've been getting into the air battles myself lately though I'm rarely on during the large RDP raids. Was racking up the 110 kills in tier 0 but now the 109 is in my K/D ratio is plummeting back to it's usual low.

Ground is another matter though :)

Too expensive to produce, tiny market. MS still have flight simulator, current version called FSX, nice product shame about the hardware support. Each generation of FS when it appeared required a hardware set-up that was top of the range or “next generation “ hardware to run it almost maxed out . So out of vogue and only for the few that will spend on hardware to run one program. Gaming has also moved on, so products for the few.

During campaigns I'm exclusively Allied (mostly British) - play Axis sometimes during intermission, love the Stuka! I play ground mostly (Captain rank I think), but have enough rank in air to fly everything.

Love the H2B on the British side, those 8 MGs really tear up the Stukas. :D

110 are pretty good for you as you get them in the first tier and we have nothing to counter your cannons. Have you ever tried to bring down a 110 with a Hurri? May as well open the canopy and throw gravel at you. :)
