What's a better alternative to the colour Ipod?

Got a creative Zen Vision:M and it is brilliant, can play nearly all the codecs you throw at it and it can be plugged into the tv so you can watch your movies or whatever on the big screen.

As for music it is also excellent for that too. Highly recommended!

If you can get it from the USA, the Microsoft Zune is pretty discounted in a lot of places.

sound quality wise an iPod is considered very good, however the stock headphones are not so great.

I've heard music from so many diff MP3 players, and i don't see any difference in sound quality, 128kbps or 320kbps.

So in my opinion, just get which ever that suits you.

Or maybe a CD player :p

when I last got one, iRiver were leagues ahead of the competition when it came to sound quality. the gadget show did a group test earlier in the year which also supported that this was still the case.

It's an alternative operating system for a variety of MP3 players. It's leaps and bounds ahead of the standard iPod OS in terms of what it an do.
So if i use that on my ipod do i escape from itunes? Basically, im having a major issue at the moment in that all my playlist music are from winamp, but if you import a playlist into itunes the next time you load the program it forgets where the playlist has come from.. it doesnt use the full filepath just the name. So i have to re-import and upload to ipod each time i want to update my songs.

Yup, Rockbox has the ability to just scan the iPod's whole hard drive and just build a database of any music it finds there, so you can just put all your music on it without any software. This means it can pick up everything that's already been put on there with iTunes as well of course.

Alternatively, you could use a standalone program like Floola to manage your iPod's music in a way that the standard firmware can still handle:
http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/

Rockbox can also dual boot by the way, so you can have both the original firmware and Rockbox on it at the same time, allowing you to choose which to use.

Personally, I use Floola to manage the music on it so that I can still access all my music form the original firmware if I need to.

Does it only run on first Generation 1Gb iPod nano? The Wiki article seems to suggest so

Other than that it sounds like a good deal, might get a nano after all!

iRiver h300, running Rockbox :p wouldn't change it for the world, yeah it may not be as sleek as other players, but it is sturdy and robust, which is good for the amount of times I have dropped it. :D

How do I find out what Gen Video Ipod I have? I want to put rockbox on it!

Can I roll back to the Apple OS if I need?

Will rockbox let me drag and drop files onto the IPOD like I can with any other MP3 player?

No, it runs on all but 80GB iPod videos I think.

iPods are still the best and will continue to be the best for some time yet.

Played with a Zune when I was in Florida - horrible, thus proven by incrediably poor sales. The creative Zen's are the next best after iPods but have a habit of going wrong.

Lets not forget, putting alternative software on the iPod will void your warranty even if removed and Apple does check as a friend has just found out.

Wow, i might actually get an ipod, not having to use itunes and having better firmware on it would be great, just add good headphones and your well away.

I'll get saving.

edit: why are there so many faulty ones on auction sites? im put off again already.

If you analyse the numbers, there are quite a few that are faulty, usually from people though that have either dropped them or tried to tamper with its o/s. However in proportion to those that are made and sold, I think I read a few months ago significantly less than 1% develop faults etc. Which is quite a feat in itself considering over 100 million have been sold worldwide.

My biggest gripe with Apple has been being tied in using DRM iTunes...however now Apple allows a large percentage to be upgraded to non DRM files of higher quality for £0.20p a track more that issue no longer exists.
