Hi all, whats better for folding, a core duo at 2.13 or twin 3.00 xeon processor server, I ask as these a possiblity of getting a new server at work and guess who gets to buy it :D

Sorry core 2 duo, plus when the twin xeons, can I use XP pro for a twin xeon server as opposed to say a 5 user licence when I don't need.

Not a clue! But I would hazard a guess at the C2D would be better than Dual Xeons. Could be wrong though.

Well dual xeons would give you four cores where as a Core 2 Duo would only give you two. The Core 2 Duo will crunch a WU faster but probably not twice as fast (guessing here but seems unlikely that it would), so you would get more work overall out of the Xeons.

XP Pro supports up to two physical CPUs so you won't need to buy a server OS.

let me explain with more detail, i'm looking for a server with 4 other pc's attached and it will be used as a pc in its own right - just used for word/excel and some basic accounting packages. got a case/monitor so looking to rip it out and put in new mobo, 1 gig ram, 2 80gigs mirror raided hd's and a cpu ( or 2 ) plus coolers ) and the cheapest graphics going ( onboard) or get a server with dual xeons and just put xp pro on, can't say where from of coarse its 2x xeon 3gig 2mb cache, 1 gig eec ram.

Many thanks

You can get conroe based xeons can't you? Woodcrest i think they are called. Are they out yet, because two of those would be effectively like 2 core 2 duos and that would fold like hell.

thats still only 4 cores? don't xeons have HT?

Sounds like those would be way over budget

Personally I'd go for the Core2Duo rather than the Xeon since licensing is usually per socket (though I think maybe XP Pro allows for 2 sockets anyway - XP Home may only allow one socket) and in terms of folding you'll only need to run 2 clients to max it out rather than 4 to take advantage of the HT, when you consider the memory needed to run 4 clients then you'd be severely pushing the 1GB if you had a Xeon

pro alows for 2 sockets, to distinct processors, rather than just two cores

Core 2 duo verses a stand dual xeon rig and the core 2 duo would win but as joe42 said there is a new xeon, woodcrest coming out (or out) which is effectively a core 2 itself. A pair of those would cream a single core 2. :)
