Sounds like it could be bedbugs.

Good luck getting rid of the little burghers, we ended up having to replace our bed and for about 18 months after hosing the skirting board with powerful insecticide. Apparently once they've fed, they crawl back to their hiding place gorged on blood, hibernate for a few months, then re-appear just when you think they're gone.

They're getting better - Colour has dulled to a deep purple and they don't itch now.

I think I'll live.

No closer to finding out what they were though although I'm tending towards a spider.

Have you tried an antihistamine cream? Just looks like a bad reaction to an insect bite.
