been playing wow for 2years ish now and im a bit bored and mifed at the game tbh, sick of grinding crap and waiting for a fresh lvl cap to hit to redo all of it.
ive heard good things about eve, but how does it compare to wow?

looks blinkin complicated to me ;) ... although it looks liek it would be quite rewarding to play, i'm not sure i've got the spare time required to get involved with it enough to be worth the subscription.

be careful of any mmo, they all seem to be grind fests. But from what i've been told EVE is a good game.

there is a 14 day trial for EVE

For those that say its complicated...its not really. :p

Eve is only good when your a noob, and to make ingame money...its the most boring grind you can imagine.

Bah you should have got the demo from steam, its 21-day trial then.

And the games made so to get your character training efficiently it takes about 2 months anyway.

i started playing the trial yesterday and after wasting all of today playing it ive come to the conclusion that its one of the most boring games ive ever played, the whole concept is excellent its just the core leveling mechanic that completley breaks it for me. You dont need to physically DO anything to level up your skills you just need to wait for them to be learnt, after playing today and realising that the developers want me to wait a minimum of 10 HOURS just to upgrade one skill I lost all motivation.

It just doesnt feel like your actions have any real purpose other than to gain money, and even after gaining money you cant spend it on anything because you wont be able to use said items without the correct skills, and to get the skills you have to wait a looooong time.......

edit: bear in mind im a casual gamer and dont have much time between work and other arrangements, on the surface it would sound like the perfect mmo (not having to play to level up) but with the odd days off i get id like to actually PLAY the game.

You point goes both ways really, I hate to stand up for Eve but I liked it that way.

PVP is actually good on Eve....HOWEVER...its the players that ruin it. Instead of playing eve for enjoyment and getting praised for good decisions...you have to work for an 'e-ego' which just annoys the crap out of me.

Eve is NOT a game. Eve is a JOB.

mabe ive not given it enough of a chance but Ive just been put off by the lack of visual results after spending my day off on it today, im trying desperatley to like it as I love the themes and asthetics.

Mabe im playing it wrong.. lol

Eve is NOT a game. Eve is a JOB.

That just about sums it up TBH, I 1st started playing in 2003, I only have a 30mil sp character so those that have played the game will know I have been offline a lot.

At times I get the urge to play it again, the whole idea of the game just sucks me in. Its just that the implementation of the game that ruins it, there is no exploration + you have to spend a huge amounts of time to gather funds for ships or training. Its just not that much fun.

IMO eve is not a game for quick sessions, to survive in anything outside noob space you need to be in a big corp or alliance and that requires dictatorships and basically you doing what your told.

Safe to say I lost my love for eve a long time ago.

Eve isn't WoW. There isn't really a level cap and the idea isn't to reach the best possible skills within 7 days like on WoW. A six month noob could rip apart a two year old player on EVE because much of it depends on skills, communication and ship setup.

I think EVE is a lot deeper on a social level too. All of the item prices are based around a player run market and if you take one foot in to the wrong 0.0 system and your toast. It's all about alliances, corps, etc.

Yes but he said he is a casual gamer, so is eve really the place for him?

On a 1vs1 I really cant see how a 6 month noob could rip apart a 2 year old player, unless he was in a shuttle or hasnt been playing for 1.5 years.

I played it for just beyond seven months. Its not bad its different, theres no pretensions of the grind. Gaining gold takes a lot of effort no matter which way you go about.

The Universe is not very interesting its flat and their doesnt appear much in it. Every system appears the same.

Its definately a social mmo, you really cannot play it on your own, you will come into contact with other players, mostly it will be in conflict.

I think its an old peoples mmo, sitting back relaxing, and messing with other players.

But saying all that, it has a life, it feels like a world, you can do whatever you want in it(excepting things out of your range). Your in it, your choices, your ways, your fights.

Thats if your not in a corp where their bossing you about all the time, which I was, and was probably the reason I left.

Its also really cool when you slip unscathed through a massive gatecamp, and really annoying when you dont.

Lots of things happen in it which are not scripted, preplanned or quested, even the most boring sedate player would have a few interesting stories to tell after a while.

I consider myself a 'hardcore' gamer by all means, having played almost all of the 'must have' titles since release- normally to a no life extent :P. But EVE is a game that has seriously given me trouble... I think I've downloaded and started 5 separate trials, and each time the game leaves me behind.

It's not that it's too complicated as such- I'm just convinced it's a game that is brilliant to the old players, or the semi-old crowd- but for newbies it's an incomprehensibly huge and open game to start-up in. Considering the 'real-time skill leveling' element, you're pretty much disadvantaged from the start just based on how long you've had the game... you have to specialize rather quickly to stand a chance against the old fellas with their all-rounded fleets.

The design of the trial / introductory levels is rather poor and uninspiring also. Don't get me wrong- it's a beautiful game and I'm sure it's rich in content- but the tutorial mission line(s) of "Warp here, left click your Cargo Bay and warp back" are rather bland and monotonous. If you've come from playing 2 years of WoW, I'm not sure if EVE will hook you as those merry hours spent walking around lowbie WoW zones did :)

My $0.02 anyway- please don't see it as flaming or trolling from a lack of experience! There's a lot of hardcore and dedicated EVE players in the OCuK community-- this is just me giving my perspective from someone that tried to hop onto the games wagon perhaps a year or two late!

I think one of the first things that hits you when you play EVE, one you start to understand how it really works, is "goddamn this is going to take a serious amount of time and shmoozing with a fleet to get anywhere". At least, it was for me, and that put me rather quickly off it. It seems like quite a fascinating concept - that absolutely everything going on in the world (bar the tutorial missions) is basically caused by other players - but I just didn't feel the need to have one game take up that much of my life.

It's also like a gossip rag for nerds. I swear, all the talk in EVE always seems to be "OMG did you hear?! Group X attacked group Y when group Z broke away from them!!"

if you just want casual, join a faction warfare corp and go hunting.

Skills when you start, are SHORT (like 10 hours), so can be a bit awkward to progress if you don't log in much. However, after a couple of months when the skills are 1-7days+, and you have a lot of basic skills covered, you dont have to worry about not being able to fit mod x, or can't fly anything but a frig, and you dont have to babysit skills anymore.

get a 21-day demo, then pay £15 or whatever to get you an extra 2 months time. make a judgment after that, because you learn A LOT in that time.

It's like crack, but boring.

yea very boring imo, but the community was one of the best for an mmo ever, thats probably changed now mind...

i spend 2-3 years in eve during the beta test and beyond had some good times on TS but the games just a bunch of alliances backstabbing each other at the end of the day.

i guess its a good game but the skill training is crazy, i spend months getting into a carrier and then they got nerfed to hell.... which pretty much killed the game for me.

the massive skill training of some skills taking months and then for ccp just to unleash the nerf bat sucks!

A chap in my local cyber cafe and he would play ALL DAY every day. i lived next door to the cafe for 3years and he would be o the PC 9am until sometimes gone midnight.

MENTAL if you ask me. id stick to CoD4 or CSS where you can opo on have a blast then go bed. Not have your whole life on a space ship which isnt real lol

Scary stuff these games.
