Whats EVE like?

My attempts at solo'ing involved jumping in a Zealot or similar and getting no more than 3 or 4 jumps into "hostile" space, *maybe* seeing a ratter or miner (and even less of a chance of a kill if they were brain dead and hadn't warped to a POS) then getting steam rolled by a 15+ man gang.

Though once or twice in a wolf was fun.. picking out the tacklers in a gang whilst the damage throwers were unable to track me was fun, then running for the hills when they call in 30 people.. for one wolf lol.

I've been playing Eve for a long time now and I still find it fascinating, there are so many different paths or careers to get involved with and I'm still working my way through them even after all this time.

At the moment the thing I'm doing is market trading which is (as are most things within Eve) a form of PvP and I'm making a nice lot of ISK from it. The method of training skills works well and I love the fact that if I blow someone's ship up, it's gone. They don't just respawn and have lost nothing like in other games. In Eve, if something goes pop then that's it!

It's a very social game. I've heard Eve described as an IRC channel with fancy graphics :) I've made friends all over the world from my time in Eve, many of which I've since met face to face.

Yes it is tough to get started but you can get into the game and be instantly effective. It's a lot easier now as new players get almost a million skill points after character creation where it used to be less than fifty thousand.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure but with a little perseverance it can be a very enjoyable game.

I have to say that EVE is the biggest change in gaming for me in almost 15 years. I have always been an FPS or Red Alert type player. I never really looked into the world of Massive Multi Player gaming. Games like WOW never really interested me in the slightest. Things like Lord of the Rings films and games never ever appealed to me. We had a gaming buddy from Holland back in the days of Delta Force back in the late late 90’s that disappeared for almost two years playing a game like WOW cant even remember what it as called. I could not for the life of me even understand the concept of what he was playing, let alone understand the addiction of it, compared to online gaming FPS. He ended up coming back into our gaming world selling his character online for something like £600, wow indeed.

For the past three years I have invested at least £3000 or more in my computer only to play FPS game and be really disappointed that I cant seem to get the buzz I did years ago. I think this is the reason we are seeing so many threads on remember the days of Amiga gaming, which I was part of big time. The biggest kick though was when you fired up your 56k modem to play against others, and even when Cable and ADSL came along and we caught up with our European counterparts and where on a more level playing field.

Games nowadays are ruined with players young and old just not really playing by the rules, spawn killing, glitching and generally being annoying little gits. Plus the fun factor seems to have been overtaken by the whole best looking graphical looking game killing a lot of players machines or crippling them to a few Frames a second. For what mostly is a scripted Single player game and online is raped for being noob if behind. Games like COD4 nearly got it back for me, Yes Graphics were amazing, but the game was immersive for a decent amount of time. Online for me killed it the second I played it, just got humped from start to finish. Maybe its me getting older and the enjoyment isn’t their anymore.

Then came EVE online, started this 6 or 7 weeks ago, I was a big Elite fan, and thought I could give it a go. Started up my character, placed his attributes and got started with the tutorial missions. At this point totally overawed with the whole learning curve. Started doing a bit of research online about character setup, ship setups, the whole shebang. 2 Days in, restarted a new character, with a probably better setup for what I thought I wanted to achieve. I must add, that the EVE online site is an excellent tool for learning EVE and especially the forums in particular.

I then released there was no easy fix in EVE for generally getting somewhere quick in learning skills quicker than anyone else. My character was setup for fighting only to realise pretty quickly I was going to be in for a few shocks. I joined a corp with a new objective in mind, start mining to make money the safe way. It’s a boring task at best, but at least your making money pretty safely. Thinking of setting up secure cans in 1.0 space was the way to go, I got busy researching the skills such as anchoring in my first few days of mining before joining my corp. Then found out anchoring cans in 1.0 to 0.8 space wasn’t allowed. Arghhhhh, nearly gave up there and then, game was too frustrating. The corp I am currently with has helped me in more ways than I could imagine. ISK if I needed it, cheaper ships, advice and getting in mission time to make ISK quicker.

In short this game for me has captured my imagination for gaming online again, so much so, I haven’t spent anytime on anything else, even my wife has commented how much time I am devoting to this game. The beauty of it for me, mining easy. If my kids need me, I dock up do what I need to do and then come back and play again. I got a cheap second 22” monitor from a place I cant mention for peanuts and use it for watching TV, browsing, email and MSN etc. Best investment in years was buying that second monitor while mining the laborious hours I need to make money in the game.

For my character though, this game is only the tip of the iceberg, it takes a lot of time to mature in this game, as someone said, you join the navy and expect to pilot a carrier straight away. Maybe that’s a sentiment I like in this game. There is also a thread in the EVE site relating to a character who is as far as I am aware taken 5 years to learn all the skills at present involved with the game.

What I love is the freedom to do whatever you want, as long as it's within the game mechanics. Some of the financial scams that have been perpetrated have been just amazing. Not, obviously, if you were a victim, but because the economy is so full formed that this kind of thing is possible - pyramid schemes, banking scams, not to mention the legitimate player based banking services, lotteries and so on. And sitll, in the middle of all this capitalism, you have corps like Big who are basically huge communist communes internally. The scope of what goes on is just mind boggling.

Wasn't surprised in the slightest when I heard they've hired a full time economist to monitor the in-game economy.

I had the 14 day trial period. It was ok, but i wasnt to impressed with it. I have never played anything like mmo's such as WOW etc. Eve was just going to take me too long to get into and to get things up and running.

they can't have all the skills in the game, atleast not to lvl 4-5.
EVE is about the people who play it more than anything, you don't have to do one thing you don't want to, theres no raiding for top level items, you can (if you really want to) mine veld all day and buy anything you want!
personaly I'd rather be killing people and taking their stuff, but each to their own!

Correct, but I believe that Tripoli has trained every available skill.

An a amazing feat imo for time and effort over a half decade, when you read that tripolli had a few close contenders challenging him for the honour though, very scary indeed.

back when i played not long after lv died someone worked it would have taken around 20years to max out every skill

exactly even with a full set of +5s half his skills are lvl 1.
eve isn't about choosing one path and being uber at it. its about being good at a few things, or so so at loads (until you've got em all to lvl 5 and can really make use of those split weapon systems on minny ships) but still its more about the people you play with.

I dont know how someone could play it without long breaks, my longest break was two years! I started again with my old character and I've been playing again since Decemeber, i'm enjoying it this time round and have gone pirate, lost a few ships and as of yet not managed to kill anything!
