What's happening with iPhone 5?

And we know the grid layout is going?

Apple know what they are doing with UIs. My pensioner parents picked up an iPad and fathomed out how it worked very quickly without needing some tuition or a manual. That's never happened before.

Don't like the UI and want to tweak it for kicks? Go Android.

I hope the gird layout is going. Why have a limit on folders? What's the point?

Mac OSX is awesome, but iOS is very dated. It worked when there were only stock apps before 3g, but now there needs to be a better way to organise stuff.

I only keep my iPhone because I purchase all my music from iTunes, but sometimes I think I should go back to my nokia 3310. It was much quicker.

I really hope the new iphone 5 will be a revolutionary upgrade from my old 3GS (which has served me well). I was really disappointed with the 4S, it's just not enough of an upgrade to make me part with £500.

I hope they do bring it out early and I hope it has a new design with 4"+ screen.

It is not enough of an upgrade from the 4. But from the 3GS it is a pretty big upgrade!
Every two generations is a worthy upgrade it seems :)

I'm hoping for a June release as this is when the contract on my iPhone 4 expires. But i'm certainly not getting my hopes up. Although it would be a pretty cruddy WWDC with no new iPhone again unless something pretty big comes to iOS

It's still the slickest mobile OS out there, IMO. I agree that the home screen is in need of an update, but that doesn't make the entire OS very dated! And if an update means battery-sucking widgets, then I can do without.

They already did that with the iPhone 1 / 3g.

No they didn't! The original iPhone was released in June 2007 and the 3G arrived in July 2008, a year later.

The 3GS arrived a year after that and the 4 a year after the 3GS. The 4 is the first iPhone that's lasted more than a year before being replaced but no iPhone has lasted less than a year as the top model.

It's a tablet. Most of the outside is screen and most of the inside is battery. They improved the screen, the battery and the connectivity. What exactly do you expect them to do? What kind of upgrade would you have introduced if you were Apple? Which mindblowing hardware improvements are even possible?

If I was Apple, I'd make the iPod Touch 80GB and 160GB, retire the Classic.
I'd make the battery on the iPhone half decent, so I don't have to charge it EVERY NIGHT!
I'd make a 7inch iPad
Intergrate AppleTV into an actually TV, so you can play Angry Birds and all other AppStore apps work on the TV, thus competing with other SmartTV's

I believe Apple are working on the SmartTV market now though

I'm just hoping for iOS6.0 The grid layout is very old now and having a limit of folder size is just stupid.

jailbreak > infinifolders F.T.W! I have 3 folders, Most Used, Others and Games, very clean homescreen

Why do you require a clean homescreen?

I just use most used on the first screen, 2nd swipe my secondary apps and all games on the third swipe. It's at least as fast as looking in various folders full of stuff.

Depends how you define "top model". The original 8gb iPhone came out in June 2007 and then was superseded as the top model in Feb 2008 by the 16gb iPhone. So in that case there were two iPhone releases in one year.

I prefer my iPhone to look as standard/stock/tidy as possible, I only have the default icons on the first screen and the folders on the second.

Just like my PC Desktop, which only has 8 icons on the desktop.

I hate cluttered desktops

I'm hoping October/November, which would make sense for a year life cycle...

My contract expires in January so would give a couple of months for any issues to be fixed. I really really hope they don't make it bigger though, one if the things I really like about the iPhone over all my other phones is that it is the right size.

It's flash memory, so it would be 64GB and 128GB unless they wanted to use more chips than was necessary. I don't know if those lines will merge - the Classic seems to me like a product with a small but specific audience who want a product that's dedicated to music. Maybe when 128GB and 256GB iPhones can be made cheaply...

Well, Apple would definitely do that if they could. They're limited by the battery technology which is commercially viable, as are all phone manufacturers. If you look inside your iPhone then about two-thirds of the space is already taken up by battery. The only way to dramatically improve battery life would be to make the product much thicker.

People tend to forget that Apple may have a lot of bargaining power, but it's constrained by commercial realities like every other hardware company. It can't just make whatever it wants to!

I think a lot of people thing the same way as him (at least, I do). The 4 and 4s made the phone a good piece of hardware, now the 5(?) needs to update the OS UI to something more modern. "Widgets" don't have to be battery sucking, WP manage to have live tiles that don't do it and shows a totally different UI to Android, iOS and BB, which are essentially the same once you get past the home screen (grids of apps).

Update the UI and I may contemplate getting one...

Ok, I stand corrected.

I like the security that apple OSs have though. Mac OSX being unix based has made it like a polished linux, which is why I love it.
Having a closed OS like iOS is fine by me.

I just want a faster more usable UI. The notifications centre like andriod was a good move. Having the camera swipe activation was also good in my books.

But somethings just seem too slow. For example switching the orientation, I have to wait for the animation to finish before the phone is usable. Switching apps is a pain having to double click a physical button. There is also an unnecessary lag when unlocking the phone.

I'm a real-time software engineer, so it pains me when things are slower than a humans ability to react. :p

There's no chance they'll go above 4" as it makes the phone too big for women and those with small hands to operate single-handedly, something Apple have said is important.

Whilst 4" is possible, I reckon they might increase the size slightly to around 3.7 or 3.8 inches but it wouldn't surprise me if the screen remained the same size.

Going above 3.8 inches would mean they could no longer call the screen a Retina display, according to their own metrics, so a size larger than this is highly unlikely.

Could they not double the pixels like they did with the new iPad or would rthat be unreasonable?

I'm really hoping for 4" screen. If the screen's any bigger I will definitely upgrade from the 4S

I seriously doubt they can or would double the display again. That would actually give perfect full HD 1920x1080 display which would be rather extreme even for a 4+ inch screen! :)

I actually find the 3.5" on the iPhone, and the overall size of the device, pretty much perfect. I can understand a bigger screen being more desirable if you watch a lot of video or do loads of browsing but otherwise I find it just about perfect. My girlfriend has a Galaxy SII and whilst the big screen is nice, I find it unnecessary and actively dislike the resultant size of the phone - it's far too large for me and I want something which sits in my hand and pocket far more easily. I suspect most/many iPhone customers feel the same way and the number clamouring for a larger screen is actually quite small as a percentage of total customers.

I prefer the Galawx S2 because it's beautifully thin!

It's nice in your pocket aswell, especially with jeans as it slips in much more easily than the relatively clunky iPhone.

but yeah, Full HD on a 4" is ridiculous :(

Would they be likely to add 50% more pixels?

apple is waiting for modified A15 soc

they will never use power hungry A9

also A15 dual core performs faster than quad core A9 and uses much less power

A15 for apple will be ready about sep october not early anyway so i think release date will be November-December

and screen will be bigger as it will give more space for battery don't forget they will use GPU SGX543MP4

so its to early for rumors screen in my opinion will be 4.3

Not sure of it works on the iPhone, but I thought 4 finger swipe was introduced to all iOS 5 devices?

Do they really need to add more pixels in? it's already an incredible screen. I'd much prefer they focussed on the camera some more than the screen.

As for the galaxy s2 they're completely different phones even though they directly compete. The s2 plastic means that it's light, which some people love, but others feel it is cheap. The metal of the iPhone means its heavier but feels like it is more solid and has quality (whether it does or not).
