Whats has the future got in store for NVidia?

AMD on the other hand are due a release of their R9 390X a lot sooner so probably best to see what FreeSync offers.

I doubt very much that we will see the 390's's before the GM200's. All the leaks have suggested that the 380's will make an appearance next and they are AMD's response to the 980/70. It will probably then be another 6 months till the 390's make an appeaerance.

I am dead set on going 4K and Gsync, so I have limited options anyway. The 970 stuff has further knackered my options being that I was 100% decided on 2x970 HOFs in SLI however this isn't going to cut it now with the VRAM turd. So I'm now looking at a 980.

After much much much deliberation I have gone back to a 980 from 970 SLI. It comes tomorrow. I had a near death experience when I contemplated a 295x2 but come back to the green side.

My advice is DO NOT buy the Acer 2k4k monitor. Its now been just over a month and I am still waiting for mine to return repaired for the second time.
The third party company Acer uses in the UK for its warranty handling is awful. Not buying Acer again.

In the last 66 days since I bought the monitor I have worked out I have only had it in my possession for 31 days.

Here is the thing that people don't see or don't know/understand....

4K requires more than 4GB IF you want all the settings turned up. Now a pair of 970s/980s have a decent amount of grunt but not a decent amount of VRAM, so some games you might well have acceptable frames but not enough VRAM. For me personally, I don't want to turn settings down, as that defeats the object of having a super big res for gaming, however not everyone thinks like me and would happily turn down settings for 4K, in which case, a single 970 or 980 alone would cope and VRAM isn't an issue.

So you have a few choices and one is.... Grab a pair of 8GB 290Xs and wait it out for a 4K Freesync monitor (if you want all the settings turned on in most games). My only concern with this way is CF profiles. I have noticed a few of the latest games don't run in CF (and AMD are a little slow on bringing out drivers) or you have to do your own profile and this results in texture flickering (speaking from forum observations).

Or... Grab a pair of 970s and grab a 4K G-Sync monitor and turn down settings...

Or... Wait for the newer cards. Hopefully they will have a decent boost of the current cards and enough VRAM to go with it.

That is my thoughts on it.

yeah ive noticed a few of your posts in other thread varkanoid.
That is pretty awful service. I'm guessing you've been chasing them pretty hard?

Can you tell I am pretty narked ?

Just got off my weekly online rant, er chat to them. The parts are "expected any day now". I am hoping I get it next week but its wishful thinking. Today been thinking about whether to just sell it as soon as it comes back and cut my losses.

Thats assuming its fixed.

Its a bit of a sweeping statement you dont need to turn down settings in all games. So far when I had the chance I played the new COD, Shadow of Mordor Ultra (yes Ultra) and Plannetary Annihilation all with full settings apart from AA. With 4k IMHO AA doesnt matter anyway. 970 SLI does cope with 4k better than people think.

I do agree you need 4k with Gsync (or freesync....) at the moment to get a good experience with todays cards and 4k.

I think the op has been put off from 970s in SLI because of the recent vram bomb.

quite right, I was. Gregster has a point as well, I'd like to max the shiz out of it. I'd consider SLI 980s but when the price fluctuates by between 50 to 70 quid on what seems like a weekly basis to me, that's the difference of £150 from one week to the next.

After the £400 SOC disappeared, everything has shot up to at least £500. Pretty crazy variation.

To give you some idea of what is what at 4K, here is some testing I did on a pair of Titans and a Samsung U28D590 monitor.

There have been improvements on a couple of those games since but it does give you a rough idea of what you need for some games in terms of power.

doesn't matter how you look at it, Nvidia drip feed us just enough tech improvement
to get us to part with our hard earned cash.

Until such time as Amd, or a 3rd party push the boat out, this situation will remain as normal. expect something with about a 15 to 20% performance improvement for a #
premium from nvidia .

I'm waiting myself to upgrade to 4k, but i'm not doing it until I see some cards that do it with everything turned on , which in turn means as games advance I'll be able to say turn off AA to get a few more years out of cards i paid silly money for.

I will be upgrading from my 690 which has been a good servant but in itself a good example how nvidia drip feed us the tech, if only a 690 had a bit more memory.
but then again why would they, when they can bring out a new card with enough memory a few months later and reap another premium ........
