I think it is quite a hot running card, reading this.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/VTX3D/Radeon_HD_7870_XT_Black/32.html
It is getting nearly 1.3V during 3D load, which is more than even my heavily overclocked 7970 watercooled is receiving.
I think you will just have to manage your expectations, try various fan profiles and accept that the card is on the warmer side which might restrict your ability to overclock. I don't think the card is faulty in any way. The temps you are getting are honestly nothing to worry about. If it was getting in to the mid 90's then yes that would be something to be concerned about, but 80 degrees up to mid 80's for a card with a lot of volts going on to it, with a reference style cooler seems perfectly reasonable to me.
You can drop the temps, but you are going to have to subject yourself to a noisier card unfortunately.
yeah I have to agree with the other posters and think it's just a hot card and not defective. mine arrived today and the temps I'm getting aren't fantastic. as I speak right now it's pretty cold in my room, windows are open the fans at 30% and it's idling at 31c but I just got finished playing games and it peaked at around 73-74c with the fan going around 50%. a 43c increase from idle to load is pretty significant. what kind of temps are you getting at idle?
My case is running pretty cool. before I put the 7870xt in my highest cpu temp the last few days was 42-43 but today i hit 47c and it's been much much cooler today.
Idle i get around 40-44C
Are you running a second display by any chance?
That is odd then that your idle is so much higher than the other guys. Reason I asked about 2nd display is that in order to power 2nd display the clocks/ volts are increased which obviousl increased idle temps.
If you are running windows 7, a decent wee gadget to get is gpu observer. That will let you see if the card is downclocking to 2d clocks and voltages.
