Kaspersky is one of the top resource hogs and general miscreant AV program available.

From it's bloated NDIS 'protocol', through to it's poor 'clearing' rate - I absolutely despise it. We recently rolled out Kaspersky to around 40 clients, totalling approximately 400 users.

The support teams workload has doubled ever since; the coding of the front app is messy; the amount of interference is creates which requires end-user interaction, and ultimately breaking end-user applications or work flows is staggering. We're now trying to 'rollback' as quickly as possible.

Simply, don't use it. I've never used NOD32 - but it looks rather antiquated to me (not really important I know), but a lot of people swear by it. However I have used Avast, and it has been the best bit of AV software I've ever used. And it's free.

I bought Kaspersky about 10 years ago for my first PC - back then it was a lightweight, fast, basic AV.

Now, sadly, to compete with the likes of Norton and to appeal to the 'PC World Brigade' they have added more bloat - bells and whistles and flashing lights. It plunges so deep into the OS it's like a goddam virus itself.

Thats why I use Avira. Fast, unobtrusive, simple but effective. Like back in the good old days!

I forget what the other tray icon looks like, but if you right click on the one that doesn't have the "a" on it (might be an "i") you can click on an option that says something like "merge with main avast icon". Job done.

It's always the first thing I do after a fresh install :)

cheers, missed that option :)

If Carlsberg made an anti-virus program it'd probably be the best program in the world.

But they don't so NOD32.

NOD32 for the win. Love it.

Tried Kaspersky for a month last year to see what it was like and was not impressed. Played havok with my web browsing.

Anyone who hasn't tried NOD32 go and get the trial from http://www.eset.com its worth having a look.

which avira product do u recommend:
the premium, the security suite or the professional version?

I actually use the free version. It has the same scanning engine as the other versions, just lacks certain features [ie the firewall, spyware module]. In conjunction with Comodo Firewall its enough for me.

If you want to try the security suite, check out this for a free 3 month trial.

;)

use no anti virus and open all the ports in your firewall...do people not use the search button or look past the 1st two threads in here...ffs
