i have a;
qx6700 quadcore
asus striker 680
thermal take 750w psu
4gb ddr 2x2gb

Do you have a budget? because without one then its kind of difficult to spec a card other than buy the fastest available....

Stay away from nvidia, thats the first piece of advice, over priced and overhyped, get this, my brother has it and its awesome

They're not that bad, just stay clear of the 9800gx2. Thats from me and my 3870xt :p

Anyahoot, with a machine like that you're gonna want something meaty. As you're board allows SLi you could either get 2x8800gt 512mb (just over budget at £130 each) or save a few bob and just buy one 8800gts (£165)with opertunity of buying another if you need it in the future.

What the hell are you talking about?!

Ignoring the insanely priced GX2, nVidia cards offer amazing bang for buck, especially the G92 8800 cards following recent price reductions.

£250 is a strange amount, you could get a any of the 8800 series, including the GTX, but then again, true next gen shouldnt be far off (GX2 is NOT next gen). So id recomend a cheap 8800GT (£130) which will provide you with all you need for now, and then blow your load on a decent next gen in 6 months...

Then again, theres the 3870X2....

a GT as said or wait for true next gen cards or if you look your find X2's from £230/£250 if you dont plan on upgrading again for awhile. This is from the money you have to spend bang for buck etc.

Either this, 8800GTX

or, 8800GTS 512MB (recommended)

Or this, 8800GT 512MB

Or wait for the 9800GTX due on the 25th which should cost around £250

Avoid the 3870X2, it uses two GPU's and still only gives you performance simalar to a single 8800GTX/GTS which cost allot less.

Youre crazy
The 3870X2 is faster than any of those Nvidia cards you mentioned besting even the 9800GTX.

I would indeed suggest the HIS 3870X2

Go read all the reviews, the 3780X2 and 8800Ultra trade blows, neither is faster across the board, thats because there directly competing, the 8800GTX and GTS are only margainly slower then the Ultra and can easily be clocked higher to suppass ultra performance and there CHEAPER.

Anyone who buys a dualgpu based card over a cheaper single gpu based card that offers simalar performance is just nuts.

okay thank you for the opinions and reviews, ive decided to go for the gt or gts cards until
the next generation of cards come out. and so whats a gt or gts card for me then? and is it worth having it in sli or a single faster card is better? any suggestions?

Don't believe everything you read on the net. The X2 is a great card and much better than the GTS/GTX.

Smartest thing to do is to buy a GT or a GTS and wait for the next gen cards. You can probably get a GTS now for around £160 if you know where to look, or if you had access to the MM (which I know you don't)

But yeah. GT or GTS now, and wait for next gen :)

Just get a single card till the next gen, its supposedly only a few months away.

Single cards are always better than Dual, as they will always run at full speed, where as on a dual card, if the game hasn't been dual card supported, then one of your cards is not going to be used, so on the X2, that would mean it running as a single 3870, and the GX2, running as a single (albeit slightly slower) single GTS, and same for 2x single cards in Crossfire/SLi, one of your cards wouldn't be used at all.
