hi, i am in the process of building my new rig, i have a DFI Lan Party mobo, opteron 146, powercolour ATI Radeon X850XT graphics card, Hiper type R580W PSU, 2 gig Geil PC3200 Ram & sata 250gig hard drive. I am now looking at the vast array of coolers but want quietness as well as cold running temps as the Athlon 2600+ system i have at the moment sounds like an aircraft in a hanger warming its engines :( - i have tried many different cooling options (apart from water cooling) but usually have to sacrifice noise for temperatures so would really like to get it right on this build. The rig is in my bedroom & i want to be able to leave it running overnight, at present this is only possible if downing a large amount of alcohol first ;)
All replies will be appreciated as i want advice from current quiet 'n' cold set ups. cheers :)

Scythe Ninja is currently the Noise/cooling performance king.

if you can fit it in your case ;)

I like my Zalman 9500 but the fan lets it down a little (tis to small), which isnt to bad because the cooler design is so effective at cooling the fan need only be running at 5-7volts.

eljaes, my system is pretty much the same as yours, the zalman cooler is fits fantastically and is so easy to instal

most coolers which use a large 120mm fan will be super quiet and cool very well

i have now been looking at the thermalright si-120 & it seems to be a choice now between this & the zalman 9500, but still not sure

oh no...... now there's another one in the running :p

have you actually got one of these on your system, if so, whats your other set up & how cool or noisy is it? :)

I've just heard some good things about it brilliant cooling and pretty quiet, I'm going to buy it in a month or two. Go with what other people have said, although the Ninja is huge so you may need a medium to large case to accomodate it and possibly someone else to help fitt it.

id say go with the ThermalRight SI-120 and a really good quality ultra quiet 120mm fan

I must admit, I am starting to think that way now after checking all the reviews. Just the fact the fan is 120mm is a really good point for me, but to be honest, its probably just the size (height) of the Zalman & the Ninja thats putting me off as i can only imagine the leverage force caused by its weight on the mobo when in a tower. surely the taller they are, the more the weight becomes a problem ;)

what about the arctic cooler...its supposed to be fairly good

that said, i have the thermalright slk947u on my old rig (in siggy) and that was superb- would deffo buy thermalright again if i needed it (my 3700+ SD does 2.75GHz on stock volts/cooler)

yes thats a very good point, but most motherboards can withstand much higher levering forces thanks to the rear clamp that hold the cpu put.

I was also thinking of getting this to replace the stock cooler for my AMD 3700SD as I want to use the computer as a TV as well so it needs to be very quiet would this do the job and would I have to put new Thermal compound or paste on the cpu?

Yeah it would... I when I installed mine it was sooo quiet that I had to open up my case again to make sure it was running - also there is next to no noise difference when turning the fan speed to max.

It's not as big as you think it will be and installs quiet easy too.
