What's the next big thing expected in the SSD space?

So, I understand the Sammy 830 and the Crucial M4 256gb are the drives of choice at the moment.

Is there anything else major expected in the next 6-10 months that would be worth waiting before one splashes on either of these?

I'm looking for an indulgence-purchase, so I can wait if there is something exciting coming round the corner.

In the next 6-10 months? Hell the next big thing for every component of your system will be out by then.

Upgrade now, SSDs are fantastic.

heh, it doesn't matter. I'm happy with my system but I think an SSD would be quite a step forward performance-wise. Since I don't 'need' it now and can wait for a few months, I was wondering if there is anything coming round or whether I should just go for it now.

SSDs are already saturating the SATA 3 interface, we need something faster if we want better SSDs. And who knows how long that will take...

But the thing is, for most usage they'll never saturate the SATA 3 spec, its not like they're jamming out 500mb+ sec on every read/write etc.. so even getting a new standard is pointless atm. SSD speed is not down to transfer speed, its the access time that really makes that snap. I don't feel much if any difference between a generation one Vertex and a Vertex 4 for instance in daily usage.

SATA Express is probably the next big thing for SSDs. From what I have read, we should see it on motherboards later this year/early next year.

idk if thunderbolt will bring anything to future ssd's?
Only external SSDs. :)

Only price drops.

You won't notice the difference between a Cruicial M4 or whatever the Cruical 'M5' turns out to be.

If you want one, buy one now.

99% of the benefit of SSDs is the near instant seek times. You can't go any faster than near-instant, and even if it was zero, you won't notice the difference between 0.001 sec and 0 sec.

Want one? Buy one.

Waiting is pointless if you can afford it now.

Faster 4k random read/write speeds would be nice. :)

Have they even finalised the SATA Express specification yet?
I think SATA-IO are very close to finalising the spec according to their website. There aren't that many months left in 2012.

SATA Express will be available later in 2012. Meanwhile, SATA will live on, is being enhanced with additional features, and will continue to be the standard interface for the vast majority of PC storage for the foreseeable future. (Source)

SATA-IO expects the SATA Express specification to be completed by the end of the year. (Source)

Hopefully we will see SATA Express on mid to high-end Haswell motherboards like the Asus Maximus VI GENE next year. :)

You could have a look at something like the pic above if its speed your looking for.

Downside for most normal things you won't notice the extra speed.

Their a bit slow booting up compared to a normal ssd

And most people would consider them not good value.

With the quirks of most SSD's transfer characteristics after sustained use (rather than fresh out the box) and even at low 4k queue depths I wouldnt rule out a noticable difference in some usage scenarios. Whether it would make a difference to your computing experience is another matter however.
