Whats the point in top end graphics cards?

How will a 5850 cope on a 24" screen - 1920x1080 ?
Iam thinking of getting bigger monitor and unsure if i need to add another 5850 for some crossfire

I've just upgared my grapics card from a 4850 to a 5850 which most people would consider a mid-range card.

I've only tested afew games with it. FarCry2 on make it doesn't drop below 80FPS and Battlefield BC2 also on max doesn't drop below 50fps.

Are there any games out there that this card will stuggle with this card, considering monitor refresh rate is 60hz.

My point is if the £120 5850 will handel everything thats out there at the mo at this speed, whats the point in paying £250+ for a top end card.

Your card is £120 BECAUSE the new cards are £300, if there weren't the new high end cards, yours would have cost, £200, they don't make your card, they are clearing old stock.

The 5850 isn't mid end, its lower high end, and considering they overclock on good cooling, 40% pretty frequently, they are VERY fast cards with a lot of high end tech and parts on them.

So asides from that, errm, people also play at different resolutions, you didn't say what res your screen was, people play with more than one monitor. Far Cry 2 is quite pretty, especially when it launched vs its performance, but ultimately its not the prettiest or the hardest game on graphics out there, infact, its far from it.

In general people pay more so that the WORST performing games still give you great performance, not just so the best performing games perform great and the really tough games require dropping settings or borderline unplayable performance.

Triple your monitors, tripple performance required(well not quite actually), get a 120Hz screen, double the potential screen rate though, 120Hz isn't what I'd call "necessary" for a 120hz screen, just nice. In some games the difference between 60 and 100fps is noticeable, though thats more for tearing than "ooo, my kill/death ratio is 10 times better when I have a solid 125fps". For me, 99.9% of people who say those types of things, think they are pro gamers but are fairly average.

Anyway I'm completely for more performance as theres plenty of situations even a now standard 1920x1080 performance will get bogged down even with the best single GPU card available.

However, I'm completely against paying more for a top end card when its not worth the cost. IE 580GTX at 50% more than a 570gtx, yet 15% faster at max, errm, no. 6870 xf smashing 580gtx for less money, yup. 6950xf for cheaper and better performance than 6990, sure. 570gtx for "enough" performance while saving massively over a 580gtx, sure.

People also have a wide difference in incomes so you can have one man on minimum wage the difference between a £200 and a £600 card is a big deal but to someone who earns £1000 a week the cost difference between the cards makes little difference to them.

What if you earn £1000 a day or higher then £600 is pocket change to those guys.

Ive worked hard all my life and now retired and the kids have long since grown and fled the nest so when i wanted a 6990 and EK water block its a nice toy to play with that gives me pleasure and i can afford it so why not.Life's too short so if you can fill it with nice toys while it lasts do it.

I play metro 2033 on maximum settings on 2560 resolution and 2 6950s with flashed bios require a overclock to play well, that's 400 pounds I've spent on gfx

Now I was one of the people hoping that the new games would make this worth it
It hasn't worked like that and only crysis and metro challenge more than 1 6950 so yeah I paid 200 for 2 games. Knowing this would I have done it? No. And I will not be altering this setup for a while infact by the time I do the new consoles will be out and ill get one of those

No more money on pc for me its just not worth it.. shame, and this coupled with unfit for sale games coming out? Cba with it anymore.. I really do think pc gaming may come to an end with the new consoles cause they will trounce pcs for years

^^I'm sure you'll find some other games that will tax your rig a little, al4x. :) This year looks to be set for some great releases.

Three quotes. :D

I'm surprised you're not getting hammered with "overkill" comments. That seems to be the trend around here when somebody has a beastly heatsink/fan or a high end graphics card or just something genuinely expensive. I'm so sick of that term to be honest.

They said same when i had gtx 8800s in sli which ive long since given away because it was too slow to run bugger all.

Whats overkill today is past it tomorrow.

the point is so you can max games with mahoosive resolutions like mine 5040x1050 or single monitor of 2560x1600. Also for 3d you need 120 fps for smooth gameplay :)
