I'm slightly out of the loop - last time I checked it was the 980X six core from Intel, which iirc ran at about 4.6ghz under water. That would still constitute a marked improvement on my current system, but not quite enough to be worth the hassle.

I believe multiple socket overclocked systems are still a pipe dream. The choice is then between multiple sockets, stock speeds and single socket, overclocked speeds. As such - what's the current market leading chip, and roughly what frequency does it clock to?

I am hoping Intel or AMD have put something on sale that trounces an X58 920 at 4ghz, or that they're expected to within the next few months.

Thank you :)

I meant multiplier.
You'd still be pretty limited to what you could clock to with the BCLK wouldn't you, assuming you could clock it? I'm googling around now, so far I've seen mention it can't be overclocked.

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=365382 (Although they say server CPU's, which this is, I assume he means it as a blanket statement)

For OC'ing, I did find this, but it's not exactly good news :p http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/xeon_e5_2687w/

I think they can go pretty far with bclk on 2011. I remember seeing a guy on this forum who has an overclocked i7 3820, the quad core locked chip.

Oh yeah, I know, I've seen the 3820's get to 125 BLCK.
But I've posted HWBot with that server CPU, they raised the frequency by 100MHZ, there's practically nothing on overclocking with them.

Fastest desktop CPU is 3960x soon to be replaced by 3970x

If you want the sort of performance you get from the 3960/70x get a 3930k which clock for clock performs the same and can be oced to the same level as the 3960/70x.

I own an i7 9xx, 980 and an 3960x, for gaming and normal use they perform near enough the same so unless you have a use that involves a lot of heavy number crunching leave the 3930k, 3960/70x alone and stick with what you have. Im assuming here that you own the 920 you mentioned above.
