Whats the saving limit for people on benefits?

He provided bank statements every quarter. It seems a bit unfair to say he's tried it on, much more like somone wasn't doing thier job to inform him that he couldn't do this years ago.

If they'd have taken the money back after the first quarter of saved trip money it would have been an oh well lesson learned rather than this after years of saving. 3.5k is for his holiday the rest of the money is saved to par for the carers trip costs.
definitely see your point on that one.

Of course she shouldn’t feel guilty, it’s her choice what to do with it, no-one else’s.

I’ve used my benefits before to buy things like an OLED TV and new graphics cards, but I’m totally housebound. Entertainment such as telly and gaming is literally the only enjoyment I really get, so I make no bones about using my money to pay for me to be able to do these things, anyone who thinks otherwise can swivel.
Indeed and I’m glad you can get those things and get to experience some pleasures in life.

You have every right :) and I’m glad systems exist. They are extremely hard to navigate too which is something the average person doesn’t understand and extremely stressful ontop of that. If I wasn’t here to do it for my mom she’d likely not have either benefit yet.

Most people struggle to even get the forms done, they are insanely detailed and overly complex.

Even with the forms done correctly, the majority of people get rejected for pip. It’s a horrible system.

Many people do feel the situation we are in now is like this, in terms of their living costs and their lives in general. The UK is its own unique mess of crazy wage stagnation, low wage economy, corrupt government spending(so out in the open mind you with mates contracts) among many other things.

Nothing else that I said was hyperbole.

It’s okay you have nothing worthwhile to contribute to this discussion that’s fine. Keep punching down I’m sure that helps.

Wage stagnation? We're seeing record wage increases over the last few years.

The UK is absolutely not alone in any economic mess and we still have living standards far and away above the majority of the globe by just about every metric.

Keep living in ignorance and self-pity though.

We don't always see eye to eye on everything but I do feel for you. :)

Think you’re the only one living in ignorance here.

Record wage increases rofl, when you’re comparing **** to ****, some slightly improved levels of **** is still ****.

You have to be living in a bubble, professional wages in the Uk are extremely low, forgot everything else.

It is amazing how the internet makes some people quick to make generalisations of others.

On X the other day a guy was verbally insulting a woman on there (a victim of domestic abuse). I replied saying to calm down and he should go and talk to someone. He immediately went to my profile saw I had long covid and said I was faking being disabled. I replied I've been disabled since birth. To that he carried on and then blocked me before I could reply.

Some of those "record wage increases" are still well below inflation, tho!

As ever, some people are doing exceptionally well and some people are worse off than they've ever been before!

The UK is not poor, but it is becoming impossible unequal. The UK is not poor as a whole, but the poor are getting poorer.

A holiday is not essential. It is by its very definition a luxury.

His condition is progressive, there is an element of there soon won't ever be the opertunity for him to have one in his life. So he saved to be able to take one with his long term carers.

Luxury or not i do find it hard to begrudge a person a single holiday in thier life before they become trapped in a bed or chair for the last few decades of thier life.

Which is fine, like I said before if he wants a holiday to Florida give it him, what I don't understand is why he has 50k just sitting in a bank account. In fact, he had more than enough to pay for the holiday 5 times over.

This is the key part

"He planned to use the savings for a six-day trip to Florida with a specialist travel company - his first holiday in 24 years - at a cost of £3,500."

"Nathan said he was happy to pay for his own flights and accommodation, but wanted support with funding the flights and accommodation of his two personal assistants"

"I have never wanted my holiday to be paid for," he said. "But I do object to having to pay for the people that will be working to support me."

This is the key part, it would probably never have even been flagged until he started asking for extra money above the 11k he gets a month and the 50k he had sitting in his bank account.

It might sound harsh when you talk about the individual but when general social care and council budgets would love just to be on their knees it does sound like he's trying it on, It's NOT his money it's all of our money and while it's sat in his account some other people that could have used it are missing out.

It's his carers that deserve the holiday. Not him per se.
It's s tough one. Asking for the money back is callous and it's all been budgeted and factored in so.... Really how can they even ask.

I don't think it's a human right to go on holiday, it's most certainly a luxury even in 2024.
That's not a great thing but a sign of the times.

Scythe79 just summed it up perfectly tbh. Initially It's a failure of the system. I wasn't aware he was asking for yet more money..... Now he's just stupid IMHO....

Not sure where TBH. Certainly not in the jobs I'm seeing. Maybe if your a banker or oil barren.

With all the price rises, ridiculous mortgage rates, energy bills, etc many people are being paid LESS in reality. I've had pay rises and a promotion in recent years, but that has pretty much been wiped out.

The economy is flat because people can't afford to buy anything. Energy prices and interest rates have crippled it. Business rates have crippled town centres.

We live in a victim mentality state these days, everyone needs to be one it seems.

if i had 50 grand id be happy to pay for my carers to come with me (if i needed them), seems a bit greedy to expect the council to pay for them to go with him when he's already had a dumper truck full of money from them.

That's the part i raised my eyebrows about when i read the article,

He claimed he saved the £50k to have a holiday which he's actually only prepared to spend £3.5k on, the rest he wants paid for by the council,

Later in the article he whined that as this is dragging on, he's no longer able to get the £3.5k early booking rate and it'd now be over £5k

He comes across as the wheelchair guy from the Inbetweeners. Just because you're ill or disadvantaged doesn't automatically mean you're a good person.
