i was suprised at how quick your fitness can fall, in school it was football day in day out, as soon as i left school, jobs and computers, and it just went downhill.

without sound derrogatory, anyone who regards themselves as reasonably fit, ie, does some kind of cv and muscle training, should absolutely breeze the standard army fitness tests.
However for fairly sedentary folk its something to aim for.

Fenris; was actually talking about treadmill running this morning and yes it is a lot different, i find you seem to run slower on them even though you think you're actually running faster than on the roads as it were.
Personally i prefer the cross-trainers, now.....military service put paid to my knees a long time ago, so i opt for the joint-friendly machines. :)

As regards losing fitness quick, yes i agree, but i think it also comes back quick too.

Aye, football at breaks, at lunch and after school at the park.

College was every weds lunctime, uni is nuttin :p

Depends on how old you are:

Its 1.5 miles (2.4km) in under 10:30 for under 30s. Before that you have to achieve 44+ press ups in under 2 mins, followed by 50+ sit ups in 2 mins. All have to be of good quality.

Im an army officer before anyone questions it. :)

You wanna update your profile then old boy.

If you've done any sort of fitness training then you'll find the run a breeze.

If you can do 2.4Km in 10mins i think that you can call youself pretty fit. I can do it in 15-17mins. so i think it's a nice target to work towards.

im guessing this is after basic since ive just been in the last hour to the army office and been told by the staff sergeant for selection its the same as stated above with a 800 meter warm up for the run and no pressups and 5 or more pullups also it depends what your going in im shure my mate who went in the signals only had to do his run in under 14 mins, im guessing your times are based on the infantry standard.

yep that is your test, after basic training, they are what you have to do to pass

We don't do pull ups at my unit, its pressups, situps, 800m warm up, 2.4k run. Strangely the sit ups really take it out of your legs as you hip flex and pull through your thighs, by the time you get to the start of the run your legs feel like jelly.
That said I still do the run in 8 minutes but you don't win a prize for doing it faster than you need to.

In my Unit they used to insist that someone stood on your feet, which I suspect is the problem.

You don't win a prize but it's nice to get praise from the RSM! Definately don't want to be the fat knacker coming in 11+ mins and having to do remedial PT ;)
