What's with delivery drivers etc. ignoring the doorbell and hammering on the door instead?

They do that all the time with me as well. I have asked them. They say it's because many people have bells that don't work.
My cheapo one regularly stopped working and it takes ages to realise as most of my delivery guys just rap the door, leave the item and scarper.

The postman, the other day, said he just doesnt ring doorbells as a matter of form. I just thought wtf!

As a part time takeaway delivery driver myself the only ones i hate are the Ring doorbells. I always stand to one side when i ring it so im not video'd. I think they make more noise outside the house than inside, the neighbours must love them.

Houses not having door numbers , however, are a whole new plane of hell for drivers. Spend a quid on a door number for gods sake! its your noodles going cold. Oh, and spotlights that burn your retinas out from 50 paces.
You know it's generally already been filming you well before you get to it?

My assumption has always been it's down to habit - Knocking on the door loudly removes any (potential) ambiguity or uncertainty that the doorbell works. Your doorbell might work and be as loud as Big Ben but that's not the case every time.

Just my working hypothesis.

We also get the bang door, or just run approach. The issue I have with is not just leaving stuff without even waiting a few seconds, but that some bang our glazed door with the corner of their bare phone and this has damaged the decorative glass overlaid shapes before and to replace is very costly.

I've even got recordings of a couple of drivers kicking the door as their hands are full with parcels for neighbours!

I have a ring doorbell. It's wired for power, it's constantly connected as there's an access point next to it. It's linked to smart speakers, my phone and to the lights so when my doorbell is pressed it chimes, alerts me and also changes the colour of the lights in two main rooms so I can see the doorbell has been pressed. If you are going to hammer at my door I am not going to notice because it's at the other end of the corridor down a flight of stairs and I'll probably mistake it for the neighbour slamming their door when they go out.

If a delivery driver has issues with doorbells not working, ring the doorbell and knock at the door at the same time. Even if I'm wearing headphones the alerts from ring will allow me to see there's someone at the door. What if it's someone who is registered deaf or has a disability where the intercom offered by a smart doorbell can give instruction?

Ring doorbells that aren't hard wired in take ages to wake up on first use of the day, so prob got fed up waiting a few times and just knock as quicker/louder.
Not in my experience, ours isn't hard wired but it's always instantaneous to respond. Perhaps it's because it's one of the newer models with the pre-roll (or whatever it's called).

As someone else mentioned, you realise 99% of video doorbells will be set-up to record before you even get to the door? My path is only 6-7ft to the door if that and it records/pre-rolls before people even appear at my gate on the pavement. But god yeah, when people leave the external sound on it makes my rage. But then again maybe that's a solution to show drivers that the doorbell does work...

Man, I'd be taking that up with the delivery company if anyone has the nerve to kick my front door!

Yeah good point. Even pensioners are going to struggle to get to the door in time to catch most drivers before they scarper!

Pre-roll for video is just that, purely for video. I doubt it has anything to do with reaction time on the bell itself. But yeah my Reolink is hardwired - I picked hard-wired specifically to combat delay or poor battery performance/life so it's kinda frustrating when people just ignore it. I didn't pay an electrician to run cables from my front bedroom down to the porch, and spend an afternoon filling, sanding, filling again and painting 3 coats for some numpty to come and hammer on the door! :p

That was an argument for having a regular known postie, but it fell on deaf ears.

RM had the monopoly, assets and money to provide a good profitable service for the modern era. But government, regulators, and union were hell bent against it becoming something useful. Now we have knock and drop parcels at different times to what's given.

Royal Fail quite often walk up to the door with the video capturing them almost ringing the video doorbell, but just moving off to tap loudly at the door (Must be more chance of long term damage than ringing)

I have checked the video doorbell many times and it does not look like a turd.

I think, instead of national military service, all kids should have to do one year as an amazon delivery driver, on a bike for extra giggles, cars not allowed.
... and also, if they survive year 1, a second year as a Barrista.

That will teach them some humility.

Ours cant seem to use the letterbox either, prefering to jam the sorry we missed you card with "Patio" scrawled over it, between the door and the frame for anybody to read and potentially help themselves.
