Whats your Career?

MI5 / spy (part-time)

been there, done that. Boring!

If I knew then what I know now..... I would never take a salaried job. Be your own boss and don't be afraid. I own and manage two businesses, one of which is developing nicely and will in time cause me to divest myself of my interest in t'other one.

Software Engineer. (Sometimes wish I didn't work in this area though, since it means one of my main hobbies and my job are pretty much the same. Takes a lot of the fun out of the hobby side of things when you do similar stuff at work all day...)

I can tell you now, IT consultancy isn't the future it used to be. Pay levels are coming down because of the amount of people willing to do a mountain for peanuts, outsourcing etc. When I started in IT, a MCSE was something to achieve and meant you could command big bucks. Nowadays, you see job adverts requiring a MCSE with a pay level of 17k, which to be honest is totally pathetic.

If I had my time over, I would probably choose a career in Customs and Excise.

To be honest, the only way to make lots of money in life is to be a Football diva, a drug dealer or to work damn hard. For some reason I chose the latter and angina and bags under the eyes that need their own transport is my reward.

Looking to have a career in business but im not sure what yet, studying accounts at the moment but i'm still not sure what route i watn to take with regard to ACCA/CIMA/CA(no chance) etc. IF i can change and get put on the CA recognised degree(which wasn't offered when i started) it should open a few more doors as its more recognised!

I've been working as an actuary for 1.5 years now. Pay is pretty good. 4 days in the office a week + 1 day study day (which I sometimes use to study!). Exams are pretty difficult and stressful though.

IT as well... everything and anything.... Project Manage, Web Development, Consultant, Hardware, Software, and Network Tech, everything and anything for absolutely pants pay.... *sigh*

I'm a repro technician / mac operator for a large print company.

We turn the utter rubbish that most design agencies send us into files that are actually viable for printing.

I'm an Automotive Engineer, working at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire.
At the moment I mainly work in the Crashworthiness department, on a HyGE sled doing crash simulation work. We mainly test automotive safety systems, however we also test lots of aircraft seats, and numerous odd things like railway carriage seats, ferry seats, and wheelchairs & their restraints. I do sometimes work in our sister departments at Full Scale Crash, if they are low on staff.
The best area I get to work in is the Safety Systems department, because we then get to take the cars out on the track and thrash them officially!! We have to do various height, ramp jumps, kerb strikes, 'J'-turns, handbrake turns, maxed out ABS stops, and all manner of other "abuse" of the cars. This is all done to help with the calibration of the airbag sensor immunity system, so that we can make sure that the airbags and pre-tensioners, etc, do not fire unless they are supposed to.
Have a look here at all the other testing that goes on on site.

I'm a Strategic Buyer of Aerospace Components for a major gas turbine engine manufacturer. It involves working with designers and engineers right from the concept stage to develop a strategy for sourcing machined components from a range of suppliers. The job also includes a lot of negotiation on cost as well as looking for future suppliers in lower cost areas such as China, Eastern Europe etc. and developing/negotiating long term contracts with my current suppliers. It's actually a really interesting job, the pay is quite good and I enjoy it (most of the time) :) Lots of scope for moving onwards and upwards too.

However, my degree is in Biology as I originally wanted to go into a completely different field. I just fell into purchasing by accident!

I work in a Call Centre that the Police out-source their vehicle recoveries to, we're basically the middlemen between 17 Police Forces and garages. We also take requests for emergency boardings in 4 Force areas and we maintain 2 Keyholder databases for 2 other forces..

Career wise im aiming to get into the Police.
