What's your job?

Apparently, I am a data analyst in healthcare. The pay is ok, I have an occupational pension and I find my work interesting, on the whole. I manage a team, with all the ups and downs you'd expect.

I fell into the job, mainly because I like counting things and I'm inquisitive. I don't have any relevant qualifications.

The downside is that I constantly have to deal with "data" that is pretty much a crayon drawing of a cat wearing a top hat.

Commercial manager - construction

Pros: work with guys who take me out on site and are a good laugh, pays decent, educational, indoorsy with spreadsheets and computers, have a really good boss, made some good mates from turning up
Cons: full of incompetent people I have to be nice to, promotion is a pain to get through/on another hiring freeze, they're a bit cheap on the work from home supplies shop

All in all, I like my job
 
Recent change: unemployed

Pros: free time for all the reading, films, activities, personal projects etc. I didn't have time for before.
Less stress
Not having to deal with all the complete waste of time stuff that work used to involve.
Not having to deal with annoying colleagues / clients.

Cons: nagging knowledge in the background that despite immediate financial situation being fine I will need to find a new job at some point.

All in all being unemployed is great (guess it's like a sneak peek of being retired), just not sustainable.
 
Retired civil engineer.

Pros: I can pontificate on all the projects i worked on over a 40+ year career.

Cons: I don't get out on sites anymore for the crack.

Be interested to hear more! I'm an EE who landed in software/service testing (smart TVs) and now a "software developer". Realistically I'm a low level hardware/embedded guy but my work is web apps and I'm... Not a natural!

I don't do any hardware at all for work and it makes me a bit sad as I'm a practical person.
 
Started out as an offshore Mech Tech.
Spent the last year as a Project Engineer and the 8 before that as a global cover flying squad Hydraulic Technician.

I miss the travel, used to get the odd amazing job onshore in places like China/Vietnam/Aus/US etc... a whole year sat in front of my computer at home looking at emails etc 0o
 
Offshore Control Room Operator (North Sea oil and gas platform)

Pros: Well paid
6 months of the year off (working 3 weeks on/3weeks off rota).
No taking the job home.
No daily commute.

Cons: Working away from home 6 months of the year.
 
Mechanical maintenance, but I will have a go at most things

Between rebuilding heat exchangers etc I try to find a place to put the big rubber willy I found

I'm and assistant procurement director for an NHS organisation.

Pros
  • Pay is pretty good
  • Decent pension
  • Good team
  • Busy
  • As I sit above the category management element of the business a lot of my work is bespoke which is quite interesting. For instance I was recently drafted out to a trust to help them procure consultants to build a new hospital
Cons
  • Busy
  • Comes with line management responsibility which i don't particularly enjoy.
  • Can be boring at times
  • Very high pressure sector
  • Stakeholders....that's all I'm saying

Pros
  • Autonomy
  • I'm the (regional) boss
  • Pay
  • Staff are generally a great bunch
  • Construction is awesome
Cons
  • Politics

Job: Senior Emergency Medical Technician.

I'm apparently a 'Senior' EMT within West Midlands Ambulance Service, genuinely don't think anything makes me senior other than time served. I'm no better trained than other EMTs :D

Been with WMAS 13 Years in one role or another but I've been in my current role now 7 Years.

I work 99% with the same Paramedic, who is the senior clinician on the vehicle however I have full autonomy as such under his watchful eye. However in fully life threatening situations such as Heart Attacks and patients who are 'Peri Arrest' (Very close to dying) Paramedic goes on the back and I'm the one driving to ED.

Pros:
  • I get to save a life every now and again
  • I get to bring life into the world
  • I have a brilliant crewmate whom I work with full time and makes the job so much more bearable!
  • I get to drive on Blue Lights (I still enjoy it admittedly even after 10+years)
  • 18 Consecutive days off every 7 weeks.
  • Plenty of OT if wanted.
  • Discounted car
  • I feel genuinely well paid despite moaners that we aren't
  • Pandemic proof as such, I'm glad I have a job but...
Cons:
  • It can be emotive at times, sometimes to the point of bringing me to tears.
  • Can also be physically exhausting, especially when wearing Level 3 PPE on a Cardiac Arrest for example, full Tyvek suit, respirator, doing CPR and then carrying what is a dead weight! by the time you get to ED you're knackered.
  • Typical NHS Politics and those trying to work their way up the greasy pole to senior management
  • Literal daily exposure to COVID 19
  • Shift work, 12 hour days/nights 2 days/2 Nights, 4 on 4 off.
However, I potentially won't be here in a year or two time, i'm currently in the recruitment process with West Midlands Train to join their Trainee Train Driver pool :)

Material mover for an aerospace engineering company.
I do stuff like database transactions, kit picking and assembly, PCB preconditioning and materials delivery. It's not glamorous but it's fairly relaxed for a decent pay grade at a company that seems to actually care about me, which is more than can be said of any I've worked for in the past.
37 hour contract (only do 5 hours on Friday) with an alternating 6am - 2:30pm and 2:30pm - 11pm shift pattern
 
Apart from owning two restaurants my main job is owning a specialist Pathology courier company.
We cover in excess of 14k miles per night and deliver to the Labs within the same 30 min window every day.
