whats your martial art?

very difficult to tell from a static shots surely, also no haks so not aikido.

Also Trust me it is very much Jujitsu, just at those moments I was presenting to the rest of the dojo and was only a purple belt then so not perfect by any means...

rotters

I never said it was Aikido, just said it looked very similar. A photographer would disagree with your first comment :p

Did Judo & Karate when I was a young kid but stopped when I went to secondary school. I would love to start up again, I've started doing free weights at home so I'm tempted to do a martial art too, for fitness aswell as being able to defend myself if I ever got into a situation.

I've been thinking about trying out Muay Thai or Kickboxing, both are brutal and will probably be the most useful in a street fight I think.

Anyone know anything about these martial arts?

Used to do Judo, came 3rd in the nationals and trained with the olympic squad for a few sessions when i was 16 but was too far away so couldnt keep it up. Did it again recently but broke my toe and couldnt be bothered to go back again when i was better. Did a bit of MMA too.

I was a Purple Belt in Lau Gar Kickboxing.. did come 1st in the Welsh Open though :)

Had to stop due to cancer in my leg when I was 13.

that systema looks really interesting..quite a few reactions that don't look proportionate to the blow that seems to have been delivered... (not saying they're faking, saying i have no idea how the techniques work)

There's a female friend of mine that studies Krav Maga as a defensive martial art and is apparently quite good at it. It always struck me as nothing more that street fighting though

I've studied Wing Chun though it was quite a few years ago now and isn't really practiced much up here in Scotland :(

Lots of the moves are based on typical street situations. It doesn't have a set 'kata' like many martial arts, there are no rules, anything goes. Its far from street brawling though, its very much self-defense based often using quite harsh offensive techniques.

Indeed. It is not a martial art. It is an unarmed combat technique.

gonna look for my picks and trophies in a bit.

not so much of a M.A but this is interesting

Never heard of this guy, however I have done a few courses with Alexander Retuinskih. Google him.

He never demonstrated anything along these lines, it was more realistic and practical. When I say realistic I'm not doubting the authenticity of it. I've experienced chi first hand, didn't realise it was practiced a great deal in russian martial arts however.

Looks very interesting. The russians are crazy.

MMA and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

*Note, my name is a very old gaming persona and has nothing to do with this. I'm quite the opposite. :p

I'm not belittling your training or experience... however I think the rise of MMA/UFC has sky rocketed in the last 5 years due to all these televised fights and there are loads of clubs opening up to teach it as a pure money making business.

What a lot of people don't seem to realise is, MMA... (Mixed Martial Arts) is exactly that. A combination of techniques taken straight out of other arts. I personally look at it as being a jack of all trades, master of none.

The clubs predominantly teach Muay Thai and BJJ as they seem to have proven the most effective in the ring/cage. However these classes are geared towards you winning fights in a competition sense rather than learning about the actual martial art itself. Which I feel is a shame, but it seems to be what people want and they pay good money to go and learn this stuff.

In my opinion any decent cage fighter has came from a good solid background of training in a single martial art and being successful with it, rather than going in cold from nothing to learning so called MMA.

Rant over, I'm sure loads of people with disagree... but hey ho.

P.S. my post was in no way directed at yourself.

So, is this the new buzzword to separate the more modern, not-so-arty styles from the traditional martial arts? :p

Not knocking it, I know a guy who went professional teaching the non-traditional combat techniques, and lord knows it is simple and effective, but I guess I define martial art fairly widely.

indeed Russians are mad, however a skill like that would be invaluable to me and i would treasure it deeply

"Not a martial art, an unarmed combat technique"

The same could be said about a lot of martial arts. It's a fighting system taught worldwide, has been around for many decades, is globally recognised. I'd say that's a martial art. It is in my eyes anyway.

Definition:

Commonly, any of several fighting styles which contain systematised methods of training for combat, both armed and unarmed; often practised as a sport, e.g. boxing, karate, judo, Silat, wrestling, or Muay Thai. Can also include military tactics such as infantry manoeuvres, aerial combat, and so on
