What's your minimum car spec?

Not French.

I think that pretty much covers it.

+1

About the only extra not standard on every car these days would be climate control - I find it such a handy feature as its just 'set and forget'. I would quite happily give up many of the other things listed here for climate control.

Why are people asking for central locking as a minimum spec? :p

It's like asking for a windscreen - it's implicit - they come with the car.

Heck my cousin in India's Tata Nano comes with central locking.

There seems to be a large majority here with significantly higher minimum system requirements than I expected!

These are mine for the next car-
-Under 10 sec 0-60
-100hp or greater if turbo, 140hp+ if not.
-Streering wheel audio controls, or on the wotsty by the side.
-Central arm rest
-Footrest by the clutch
-Rear parking sensors
-usb socket
-sportyish looking with nice alloys etc
-under £10k to buy

My current golf ticks none of these boxes other than the foot rest so anything is a bonus!

Err.. I guest thats it for me really, but things that I would like but can live without would be DAB, DRLs, Front parking sensors

I'm very much heading down the path of a Polo r-line tsi, ds3 dsport 150, Ibiza FR act etc etc for my next car atm. Warm hatch land here I come! :o

The only thing I want is that it puts a smile on my face when I drive it and look at it.

Golf does both of these. Although, PS would be nice but it doesn't bother me.

Features I like on my current car, which I would like on others:

- Heated seats
- Cruise control
- Powerfold mirrors
- Auto wipers
- Auto lights
- Dimming rear view mirror
- Climate control
- Heated front screen
- Keyless entry (Doesn't work now due to additional security, but when I did use it was good)
- Keyless ignition
- Xenon's
- Spacesaver wheel
- DAB radio

Depends what type of driving I'm doing.

The Westfield hasn't even got a windscreen!

For an "around town car" or smoker then front leccy windows, air con and a nice radio will do.

Anything I'm going to drive any distance, then it's auto, cruise control, climate control, vented seats, full leccy windows, electric leather seats, dimming mirror and xenons or if not xenons, projector headlamps.

That pretty much covers all my four cars - Westfield (driving car), Astra Mk V (around town/smoker/don't car where I park car), Ford Scorpio Cosworth and a Lexus LS400 (both long distance cruisers).

PS = Power Steering ?
And do you mean your golf no has power steering ?

Most be over 20 years ago last time I owned a car without power steering (Back in my old days of me owning ford mk2 XR2 & RS Turbo's )
(But maybe am wrong and am missing a few cars out somewhere that I owned that I can't remember )

My minimum requirements would be:

258bhp
50mpg
0-60 5.8 seconds and 155mph
8 speed gearbox with paddleshift
Harmon Kardon stereo
Widescreen navigation
Dual zone climate control
Electric leather seats
Auto Xenon Headlights
Auto Wipers
Cruise Control
Leather centre console
Wood Trim
Instrument cluster with large LCD display

Thats how this thread works right? :D

There's no way you're getting 50 mpg out of 258 bhp :p

Ok so there was no traffic and it was a Motorway trip but even so, I can't get too annoyed with that :D

My friend bought a brand new VW UP. No aircon, hub caps and no central locking but it had DAB! I told him he was a muppet but he wanted a brand new car.

So you'd immediately dismiss a car that does 0-60 in 5.1s as not fitting your requirements?

Well, where does it end? If I'd have said 5.1s, you'd have scoffed "What about 5.2s?", ad nauseum.

I need to draw the line somewhere, I drew it 5s :)

How bizarre. It's a bit of a daft performance metric to base your purchasing decisions solely on. For example, a Civic Type R does the 0-60 sprint in, what, low-mid 6s? This doesn't mean it wouldn't get mullered once rolling by a car more powerful that perhaps can't get to 60 as fast due to gearing, maximum RPM, aerodynamics, drivetrain, weight, whatever...

Of course, I do understand that there are more factors at play with every car in question. I can't easily start quoting torque figures or gear ratios as part of my criteria, even though that would indeed be more accurate. It's an easier way of saying what I want, essentially.

The rush of hitting the speed limit quickly is an enjoyable thing to me. I don't do silly speeds on public roads, so a car that could pick up insane amounts of speed later on (say, an E60 M5), wouldn't be as appealing. Appealing, of course, but in other ways. I'd still take an E60 M5, of course. After all, it hits 62mph quicker than 5s... ;)

Cruise Control.

I literally looked for the cheapest car with cruise control I could find nearby when I got my current car - a Saab 9-3.

But of course much of current BMW's 0-60 time is a product of the 8 speed gearbox and launch control rather than the genuine performance, so there will be a number of cars which on paper are slower than an M135i and have a 0-60 of a smidge over 5 seconds but in reality are as quick.

And rejected by you ;)

Look at my car for example 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. That sounds quick, especially for what it is, but come on, it's mostly in the gearing and the launch control. I bet it's not really as quick as an E34 M5, as the spec suggests.

I agree with every point you've made here :)

That being said, I maintain I want a car that hits 62mph in less than 5s.
